Fashola proscribes honourary degrees in Lagos State University

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State has ordered the stoppage of the award of honourary degrees in the State owned University, Lagos State University. The Governor gave the order at the 17th convocation ceremony of the institution held at the Ojo main Campus, Lagos. Fashola while promising to reposition LASU for
global competitiveness, also noted that the need to ban the award of honourary degrees become a matter of expediency owing to the fact that the concept was been ridiculed by several institutions in the Country thereby making it meaningless in the eye of the public.
He said such awards have never in any way added value to the society, adding that such awards ordinarily was supposed to be commensurate with the awardee's contribution to the development of the society, rather than serving as a network for people to raise their Curriculum vitae in the society.
In his words; "A honourary degree, which is a mark of honour, is conferred by any degree-awarding institution on a person as a way of honouring the contribution made by someone in a specific field of human endeavour or for contribution to the society in general.
"All the honourary degrees that we have awarded to people in different disciplines have not reflected in adding value to the society. And because we are determined to keep the stream of honours here, we have decided to raise the bar. Our University wants to lead this society to a higher degree of excellence by challenging our people to see for higher values", he submitted.
