Nyesom Nwike: Goodluck Jonathan Appoints a Corrupt Minister

Rotimi Amaechi
Is fighting Corruption in Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's agenda at all? That is the question on the mouth of Nigerians as they go through some of his appointees as Ministers. The President has just named Nyesom Nwike as minister. A guy who is on bail; charged for Stealing N4.7 Billion of Rivers State Government funds by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in October 2008.
Odein Ajumogobia, SAN - representing Rivers State - was Foreign Minister, until Monday, 30 May 2011, when President

James Ibori, the Ogidigborigbo, and funny Nigerians!

Southwark Crown Court
We are Nigerians, aren’t we a funny lot? I attended the preliminary trial of James Ibori on 24 June 2011. Despite the fact that I have been to the Southwark Crown Court several times, I am always unsure of the shortest route to meander my way around the beautiful structures that dot around River Thames (that snaked and divided London in two) from London Bridge to the Court. But not in this instance; why?

Nigeria; A Useless Ministerial Screening

Senate President, David Mark
Expectations of a rigorous screening of the nominees as promised by the Senate Leader, Senator Vicftor Ndoma-Egba, SAN, on Tuesday did not materialise, yesterday, as the Senate did not honour its promise not to allow any of the nominees to bow and go. What transpired proved to be a "hollow ritual". In the end, Senate confirmed seven of the 34 ministerial nominees presented to it by President Goodluck Jonathan. Before the confirmation proceedings began yesterday, the Senate approved 20 Special Advisers for the President.

Nigeria’s President Jonathan Must Trim the Number of Ministers

Goodluck Jonathan
On May 2011, PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, gave reasons why he cannot reduce the size of the incoming Federal cabinet below 36 ministers, saying that he was under legal obligation to appoint a minister from each state of the federation. The President told the Presidential Advisory Council, PAC, led by Gen. TY Danjuma, that though the cabinet had 43 ministers, he lacks the legal powers to prune it beyond 36 ministers.
The 1999 constitution mandates the President to appoint at least one Minister from each state of the federation including the FCT. There are currently 36 states plus the FCT in Nigeria.
I am calling for this constitutional provision to be amended. Instead of 43 Ministers, I recommend only 12 - one from each Geopolitical zone, and the remaining six that may come from wherever purely on merit.

Lamido Sanusi, Nigeria and Sharia Banking

CBN Governor, Sanusi
The battle line has been drawn on the proposal by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Lamido Sanusi to establish Islaimc/Sharia Banking in Nigeria. Last week the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) dismissed the Anglican Bishops’ declaration against the establishment of Islamic banks as parochial, mischievous and baseless. The group’s director, Dr Is-haq Akintola said in a statement that the threat by the bishops to go on demonstration if their position was ignored is not only callous, but shallow and provocative.

Bankole: It’s Payback time

Dimeji Bankole
Months back, a member of the House of Representatives went public to say the House leadership procured articles at inflated prices, and that due processes were not followed in the procurement of the said items. Hundreds of laptop computers that Nigerians buy at N120, 000 at most were reportedly bought for about N330, 000.
Hon. Dino Melaye, remember him? Melaye, represents Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal constituency of Kogi State, That controversial member of Nigeria's

Goodluck Jonathan: Saying more and doing less

Nigeria power supply17 Nov 2010 was the day President Jonathan lied to the entire nation when he predicted stable electricity by April 2011. President Goodluck Jonathan said in Abuja that going by his administration’s plans for the power sector, Nigeria should be generating enough power for use in homes, offices, and commercial enterprises by April this year. Two months after the projected date, Nigerians say they are only enjoying stable darkness or at best consistent power cut.

Nigeria, the turbulent north and the Almajiri threat – Part 2

In part one of this series, I pointed out that the post-election violence that  ravaged the northern part of Nigeria as Goodluck Jonathan  triumphed to victory after the April 16 2011 Presidential elections was not merely a revolt against the notion that a Southern Christian had stolen a presidency that belongs to the Muslim North. It was also an expression of the frustration at the poverty that ravages the North.

NBA president as Jonathan’s honourary adviser? Say NO

Joseph Daudu
Amidst reports that the president of Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Joseph Daudu, SAN, has nominated his wife NBA’s representative in the Nigeria Human Rights Commission, NHRC, President Goodluck Jonathan has also nominated the NBA President to become his honourary adviser.
Why would the President of NBA nominate his wife as NBA's representative in the NHRC? The last time we checked his wife was a High Court Judge. So why should a Judge represent Lawyers in that Commission? Absurd I’d say!

On Dimeji Bankole versus EFCC

Bankole versus EFCC
On Tuesday, 31 May 2011, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC expressed worry over an alleged plot by Speaker Dimeji Bankole to launch campaigns of calumny against it and some of its officials. This is coming after Bankole has refused to respond to EFCC summons twice. Twice has EFCC summoned Bankole to answer for his alleged crimes, twice Bankole defied the might of the EFCC.
What is in issue here?

With the Nigeria Senate on Tuesday passing the harmonised version of the Freedom of Information Bill, the ball is now firmly on the court of President Goodluck Jonathan to fulfil his campaign promise to Nigerians. The Senate on Tuesday passed the harmonised version of the Freedom of Information Bill, reducing the weight of the penalty for destroying or falsifying public records by any public officer.

Someone Should Call PDP to Order

Goodluck JonathanThe aggressive speed with which the ruling Peoples Democratic Party is hounding political opponents should be a cause for concern to all Nigerians and friends of Nigeria. These actions by the Nigeria Government give the impression of a country in crisis and is unnecessarily heating up the poliy. Three News  report in one day (yesterday alone) seems to indicate the government of Goodluck Jonathan is afraid of its shadow.

Nigeria, the turbulent north and the Almajiri threat – Part 1

WHEN Nigeria’s presidential election results started trickling in on April 17th, showing that the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, was heading for victory, youths in the country’s north started to burn buildings in protest. While the election itself was hailed as an improvement on the rigged and violent polls that have kept the ruling People’s Democratic Party in power for a dozen years, its outcome has widened old divisions in Nigeria’s’ 162m

Why Muhammadu Buhari Lost the Presidential election - 1

Buhari
According to Salihu Mustafa, There is no way Buhari would have won the Presidential election, with or without rigging and for the following seven (7) reasons:
1. Buhari has never aligned himself with practising politicians, even those in the north. Rather, he has assembled neophytes and rubble rousers who have no credibility in the eyes of elder politicians. These
