Court nullifies Folake Olunloyo-Osiniwo’s election

The election of Hon. Folake Olunloyo-Osiniwo, representing Ibadan South West/Ibadan North West federal constituency at the House of Representatives, was yesterday nullified by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan. The court also ordered a fresh election within 60 days.

Olunloyo-Osinowo, who contested the April 21, 2007 election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

But her major rival at the election, Idayat Adebusuyi, of the Action Congress (AC), challenged her election at the tribunal, saying INEC erred by declaring her opponent winner because the election was fraught with irregularities.

The tribunal, however, upheld Olunloyo-Osinowo’s election, saying INEC could not be faulted in its conduct of the election.

Dissatisfied, the AC candidate went to the appellate court which nullified the election.

The three-man panel, headed by Justice C. B. Ogunbiyi, nullified Olunloyo-Osinowo’s election owing to the irregularities that marred the exercise.
