85 ministers to serve in Akufo-Addo’s second term following collapse of seven ministries

President Nana Akufo-Addo has cut down the number of ministries in his second term from 36 to 29, succumbing to pressure from the governing NPP’s lack of majority in Parliament.

In a report filed by state-owned Daily Graphic, the move will automatically mean that the number of ministers, deputy ministers and regional ministers to be appointed by the president will not surpass 85.

The cut down on ministries followed the collapse of all the seven specialised ministries the president created in his first term.

President Akufo-Addo had in his first term 36 substantive ministers and seven ministers of the state overall.

He also had 48 deputy ministers, as well as 16 regional ministers and 16 deputy regional ministers, bringing the total number of ministers and deputy ministers to 123.

They are Ministries of Inner-City and Zongo Development, Business Development, Regional Reorganisation and Development, and Planning.

The rest are Special Development Initiatives, Aviation, and Sanitation.

The president is expected to release his ministerial list this week to coincide with the establishment of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, pro-government broadcaster, Asaase Radio reports.
