Abba Community In Anambra Stage Peaceful Protest Over Land Dispute With Ukpo
By Azowue O. Emmanuel
The people of Abba community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State in their hundreds took to peaceful protest this afternoon, 4th June, 2020 in what they described as the continual Nigerian Police molestation, intimidation, harassment, unlawful arrests and detention of their people in a land dispute between them and the people of Ukwulu and Ukpo communities, two neighboring communities with them.
They are accusing the Nigerian Police for being financially induced by one money bag from Ukpo, Chief. Arthur Eze, who they said financially induced the Nigerian Police to carry out acts of terrorism against their people.
They took to the Anambra State Government to register their displeasure and anger for the continual silence of the State Governor, Willie Obiano, who have been sent several letters of appeal to intervene in their unfortunate situation in the past.
The protesters have vowed to continue to protest until their demands are met.
They fingered the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Adamu Mohammed and the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. John Abang of bias as the Nigerian Police have been providing protective cover for the people of Ukpo who have embarked in the destruction of both the private and public properties of the people of Abba community.
They noted that the Supreme Court Judgment declared on 15th February, 2019 directed the disputed parties in the land dispute to go back to the trial court and continue the litigation process due to some irregularities that occurred with the trial court judgment which the Court of Appeal failed to take into consideration before declaring the case in the favour of Ukpo and Ukwulu communities.
They are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to come to their aid as their fundamental human rights are daily abused and desecrated.
They are also questioning the unconstitutional and illegal actions of one Mr. Arthur Eze from Ukpo, who have been propelling acts of provocation against their people with the aid of the Nigerian Police, whether he is above the laws of the land, as he has continually disobeyed court orders and flaunted every legal peace means of settling the land dispute with them.
The people of Abba are presenting protesting in the Federal Highway in from of the Anambra State Government House, blocking one of the roads that link Anambra and Enugu states as means of registering their anger and frustration.
Some of their placards the protesters from Abba are carrying bears thus:
#Why has the Anambra State Government kept Quit over the lawlessness of Prince Arthur Eze?
#Abba Community asks if Prince Arthur Eze is above the law of Nigeria?
#Is Anambra State Government Encouraging us to take laws into our hands by its silence?
#The IGP must show he’s not involved by calling the Commissioner of Police, and OC, SARS, Awkuzu to order
#Why is the government of Anambra State yet to release the white paper of Justice Anigbugo Panel?
#Nigerian Police should maintain neutrality in dispute between communities. Justice should not be to the highest bidder
#The Connection of Prince Arthur Eze to Abuja has become a curse to many communities rather than a blessing
#SARS Awkuzu should fight crime and criminality, not land dispute
#IGP should obey the interlocutory order of FHC, Port Harcourt if he’s not abating the lawlessness of Prince Arthur Eze
These are some of the salient questions the protesters are begging for answers from the Anambra State Government and the Government of Nigeria
