Abia State And 2019, My Views – By Chuks Ibegbu

For one reason or another, Abia state have not been where it suppose to be since the restoration of democracy in 1999 .The foundation in 1999 was actually set on a murky footing. It is in the light of this fact that we shall situate the effort by the present Okezie Ikpeazu regime to give the state a new sigh of relief and sense of direction. But we cannot fully judge and appraise Dr Ikpeazu based on his ongoing first term in office as his first two years in office was marred by undue litigation and counter productive tantrums by opponenents. Much more would have been achieved by now but for this legal fireworks with all its distractions. Naturally no one would have expected Dr Ikpeazu to look askance as his detractors tried to sweep him off from office then.Yet he remained dogged and strong in those stormy days.

Thereafter and despite the human, material and psychological effects of these battles, Dr Ikpeazu has made suprising and tremendous effort to reposition Abia state . The road construction/rehabilitation sector, health sector, agricultural and educational sectors in the state are remarkably accelerating in the positive direction. The recent effort to provide jobs to teeming Abia graduates and the skill promotion and acquisition template of the Okezie Ikpeazu administration are encouraging. Several young men have been sent overseas for training in modern shoe making processes.

On the vexed issue of salaries and pension in the state I have made enquiries and found out that MDAs in the state are not owed. Some tertiary schools in the state like Abia Polytechnic that owe their workers and pensioners came to such insidious position by the ineptitude and loopholes created by past managements of the schools.Ordinarily they were not suppose to owe their workers and pensioners for any reason. Yet the Ikpeazu administration has set the machinery in motion to sanitze the schools and ensure the welfare of their genuine workers and pensioners.. On the issue of the Abia charter of equity, the truth has to be told . Abia North and Abia central senatorial zones have ruled the state for sixteen years (eight years each) .

In the spirit of equity and fairness, Abia South senatorial zone ought to have their eight years too.If igbos want equity in Nigeria, they must do so in their domain. The beauty of democracy and democratic government is the democratisation of justice and fair distribution of political offices and accoutrements It is my belief that with the current dividend of democracy trajection of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu in Abia state, he will achieve more in the years ahead if given another mandate in 2019. This is my unbiased view.
