Again, Kano censorship board re-arrests singer Naziru ‘Sarkin Waka’


The Kano State Censorship Board has reportedly re-arrested a popular singer, Naziru Ahmad, popularly known as ‘Sarkin Waka’, DailyNigerian reports.

The prolific singer, who was turbaned as Sarkin Wakar Sarkin Kano by the former emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll, was first arrested in September last year, after releasing a song critical of the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

A popular Kannywood director and producer, Aminu Saira, tweeted the latest arrest through his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday night.

The tweet, which was posted in Hausa said: “I announce the arrest of my good brother, Naziru M. Ahmad by Kano State Censorship Board, under the Kano State government. He is now under detention. Details later.”

The chairman of the censorship board, Ismaila Afakallah, neither picked our reporter’s call nor responded to a text message seeking his response.

Mr Ahmad was earlier arraigned before a Kano magistrate’s court sitting at Nomansland for two uncensored and unlicensed songs “Gidan Sarauta” and ”Sai Hakuri” on September 12, 2019.

The singer however pleaded not guilty to the offence, which is contrary to Section 100(2) and punishable under Section 112 of the Kano State Censorship Board Law 2001.

Ruling on Mr Ahmad’s bail application, the presiding magistrate, Aminu Gabari, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2m and sureties to include his biological father or his relation and either a ward/village head in his area of or any Hisbah commander in the 44 LGAs of the state.
