Obiora Okonkwo, Ekwunife, others sulk
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned the party’s candidacy in the upcoming 2021 Anambra State governorship election to the Anambra south senatorial zone.
The party adopted a zoning arrangement and agreed that the next governorship candidate of the party will come from Anambra south zone.
The decision was reached following an emergency southeast caucus meeting at Enugu on Monday.
The resolution saw some PDP bigwigs that are already warming up for the election sulking and counting their losses ahead of the November 6, 2021, governorship election.
Amongst them are Senator Iyom Uche Ekwunife, Dr Obiora Okonkwo and a host of others who have declared their interest to contest in the election..
All interested participants in the party’s primary election for the election were categorically told to shelve the idea till further elections.
The meeting saw Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State in attendance.
Governor Wike, it was gathered, was in Enugu to commiserate with the family of Ekweremadu for the death of their Mathias Ekweremadu who died a fortnight ago.
Contributing, Wike agreed with participants, while address the PDP stakeholders in southeast, that rotation or ideal is an ideal part of PDP political agenda.
Consequently, the adoption sealed the aspiration and hope of Dr Obiora Okonkwo and Iyom Uche Ekwunife, both of whom hails from Anambra central senatorial zone.
According to ElombahNews partner, Mr. Eneh Victor Chigozie, at the meeting yesterday in Enugu, a 5-man committee was appointed to resolve all crisis in Anambra PDP.
The members are:
- Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi – Chairman
- Gov Okezie Ikpeazu – member
- Ex gov Peter Obi – member
- Ex gov Achike Udenwa – member
- Senator Ayim Pius Ayim – member
Our correspondent noted that these men will possibly select the candidate for PDP in Anambra state.
He learnt that apart from the usual PDP crisis in Anambra state, that the interest of Wike and Peter Obi in 2023 will play a major role on who picks the party’s ticket in Anambra.
His words: “Wike is pushing to become the Vice Presidential candidate to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state.
“Meanwhile, Obi is said to have reached an understanding to remain Atiku’s VP.
“Therefore, the two interests if not reconciled will still tear PDP Anambra apart as we move closer to November 6 election,” he added.
