….Bomb scare at Anambra INEC, a hoax

The civil society organizations under the auspices of the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room have dismissed the reported planting of bomb at the headquarters of the State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as hoax.

The Civil Society Situation Rooom comprises about 70 civil society organizations that came together to ensure free and fair election holds in the state in line with the constitution, electoral act and international best practices.

Speaking to newsmen in Awka on Thursday two days ahead of the scheduled Anambra State gubernatorial election fixed for November 18 2017, the convener of the group, Chief Cement Nwankwo pointed out that its investigation showed that heavy number of security operatives has been deployed to the State for the elections.

Nwankwo  also faulted the seeming invasion of INEC premises by the Police Bomb Disposal Squad over unconfirmed report of discovery of bomb at the premises without invitation or approval of the electoral body, adding that the rumour has no foundation

While hailing the deployment of police to provide security before, during and after election, he condemned the heavy presence of the security agents in the state, saying it could deter eligible voters from coming out to exercise their franchise.

He also condemned the re-deployment of top police chiefs in te State including the State Commissioner of Police, Garba Baba Umar few days to the election, contending that the newly-posted security officers might not master the terrain few days to the election.

Nwankwo who is also the Executive Director of Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre expressed conviction that INEC is ready for the election, and called on the voters to troop out and cast votes for candidates of their choice in both the gubernatorial poll and House of Assembly by-election for Idemili North state constituency.

He assured that the civil society body would monitor the election at all the states to ensure they comply with the guidelines.
