Anambra police bust ‘one-chance’ operation, recovers large sum


Police in Anambra on Thursday arrested a criminal gang of one-chance operators and recovered N400,000 from one-chance cab operators, snatched from a passenger.

This was disclosed in a press release by the Anambra State police command’s spokesperson, SP Haruna Mohammed.

According to SP Mohammed, the suspects were arrested on Tuesday at Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi Local Government Area.

The police spokesman said four suspects were arrested in connection to the attempted robbery, two of who hail from Enugu State, as follows:

  1. Collins Okoli, 33,
  2. Friday Ebie, 20
  3. Cynthia Agu, 20, and,
  4. Mary Andrew 20 years.

Haruna further disclosed that their victim was a 30-year-old Nwanye Philomina, a lady from Awkuzu.

He said, “When the vehicle got to Nkwelle Ezunaka, the syndicate, having suspected that the victim had money in her possession suddenly stopped and asked her to come down so that they can adjust the seat.

“Oblivious of their plan, the victim came down from the car and as soon as she stepped down from the vehicle, the hoodlums sped off with the victim’s bag containing the sum of Four hundred thousand naira (#400,000).

“Victim immediately raised alarm which attracted the attention of well-meaning individuals who pursued the suspects upto Nkwelle community where police patrol team attached to 3-3 Division intercepted them and arrested them.”

He noted that it took concerted efforts by the Police before they could rescue the suspects from the mob who descended heavily on them.

“Meanwhile, the snatched money was recovered and vehicle used in perpetrating the offence impounded and registered as exhibits.

“Case under investigation after which suspects would be charged to court for prosecution,” Haruna said.
