Anambra Targets Huge IGR From Honey Export, Trains 1000 Youths

Anambra State has set machinery in motion to become one of the top three states in Nigeria in the production of honey, as it targets to export huge quantity of honey abroad to raise huge capital, in addition to internal revenue.
Governor Willie Obiano who stated this yesterday while flagging off the three-day Capacity building/Workshop for no fewer than 1000 youths who have been mobilized to drive the process of domination of the state in honey production held in Awka, the state capital.
Governor Obiano who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant ion Agricultural Export and Live Chain Value, Obi Okwuosa noted that the training was aimed at empowering the youths to acquire skill in bee keeping and honey production, stressing that an extracting plant would be centralized where bee-keepers would turn in their products for the export market.
Obiano stated that ‘Anambra Honey’ remained one of the best in the country, stressing that the high quality of the products had brought about flooding of fake and adulterated products in the markets.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export, Afam Mbanefo stated that the state has no fewer than 100,000 registered farmers and expressed the hope that more honey producers would be identified during the training programme.
Mbanefo who was represented by the State Coordinator of Agriculture Development Project (ADP), Jude Nwankwo revealed that fourteen different types of fake and adulterated honey products are in the market, assuring that fake producers would be driven out of the market as more quality products flood the market.
Earlier in his welcome address, the State Coordinator of Apiculture Society of Nigeria, Christopher Enwelibe stated that the empowerment programme was the highlight of this year’s International Bees Day which had as its theme:”Save The Bees.”
Enwelibe said bees produce honey which serve as oxidant booster, anti-ageing, energy builder, cures indigestion and sores, ulcer, helps wound recovery, checks arthritis and rheumatism, diabetic occurrence and prevents some cancers.
Apart from honey, he said products of bees include bee venom, bee bread, bee bread and bee wax
He lamented that inability of Nigeria to afford 10 metric tons of bee wax demanded by China during the 2018 Afro-China.Bees Exhibition, adding that the empowerment programme would bring in more producers to meet the demand.
A resource person, Obidi B., while presenting his paper on the Benefits of Bees and Honey, stated that honey is in high demand because of its multi-medicinal importance, especially in the production of most of children’s syrups.
He stated that honey produced in tropical African continent is better than foreign products as according to him, honey produced from feeding bees in the closet during winter abroad unlike in Africa where they produce honey naturally.
Another resource person, Engineer Emeka Okeke delivered a paper on the “Traditional and Modern Methods of Bee-Keeping” in which he took the trainees on the foundation and advancement recorded so far in bee-keeping and its numerous products.
