Anambra Teaching Hospital loses CMD, as Obiano appoints immediate replacement

The Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano has appointed the immediate past Commissioner for Health, Dr Joe Akabike as the new Chief Medical Director (CMD)of the state-owned Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital.

Dr Akabike’s appointment was sequel to the sudden demise of the former CMD, Dr Basil Nwankwo.

While mourning Dr Nwankwo, Gov Obiano in a statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu expressed deep sadness over the loss.

According to him, “Governor Willie Obiano is saddened by the unfortunate passing of Dr. Basil Nwankwo, who performed creditably well as Chief Medical Director (CMD) of COOUTH.

“Dr. Nwankwo has been in the frontline saving lives since the outbreak of COVID-19, together with his colleagues at Amaku, Anambra state Ministry of Health, and other partner agencies.
“The state government is in touch with late Dr. Nwankwo’s family and wished his soul eternal rest.”

The statement also announced the appointment of Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, who was until now the Executive Secretary of Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), as the new Chairman of Anambra State College of Health Technology, Obosi. He was replacing Dr Akabike, hence expected to combine the two roles.

The appointments takes immediate effect.
