‘This assumes a new dimension in Buhari’s current govt because it is supposed to be a change govt. It promised to break away from those constraints that have dragged Nigeria backward.’
I have earlier written on the subject of “Church and State” in addressing the controversy surrounding the deployment of Rev. Mbaka by his church. Now, we can go further to analyze the implication of the relationship between the ruling party and Fr. Mbaka.
First and foremost, for historical accuracy, the governments of Nigeria have over the years maintained dangerous relationships between the State and religious faiths. It could be seen in the government’s undue involvement in the pilgrimages either to Mecca or Jerusalem.
The government sponsored these pilgrimages and took care of detailed logistics and even selected who was qualified as a pilgrim. In Jonathan’s era, he did everything to turn the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN] into becoming part of his cabinet. All those are dangerous for the progress of Nigeria.
This old problem assumes a new dimension in Buhari’s current government because it is supposed to be a change government. It promised to break away from those constraints that have dragged our country backward. In the light of that promise, it will be odd to see the ruling party enmeshed in a controversy over how the Catholic Church deploys its pastors.
Seen from the angle of the church, it is a thing the church should be concerned about – that one of its pastors had become too exposed to partisan politics that he has placed the church in a position where it is antagonized politically for merely performing its standard responsibilities.
Mbaka seems to rise above his church, yet is unable to resign his pastoral ministry in full pursuit of politics. That would call for a disciplinary measure to be carried out by the church against Mbaka.
From the point of view of the Nigerian citizens, there is a reason for deep concerns about the intentions of the APC. It would appear the party is just an opportunist, like any other political organization and that any claims it may have to chance is a false claim.
Nigerians should be wary of any government that tries to exploit the religious different of the people and use same for the purpose of gaining advantage and in the process polarize the population. We need to be building mutual understanding among various faiths in this country.
To do that successfully, the government must stay away and removed from religion. The only involvement the government should have with religion is to ensure religious freedom.
