At least 19 persons have been confirmed dead and 5 other left with varying degrees of injury after some heavily armed Fulani men attacked Ancha village, Bassa Local Government in Plateau State on Friday.

The Plateau Police Commissioner, Mr Peter Ogunyanwo confirmed this to newsmen during a press briefing in Jos, the state capital.

Mr Ogunyanwo, during the briefing, said that preliminary investigation indicated that the attack was carried out by Fulani herdsmen.

He said: “We are investigating the matter, but from our findings so far, the attack was carried out by Fulani herdsmen to avenge the killing of a young boy.

“We have been told that a Fulani boy resident in the village was reported missing on August 3. We are told that his body was later found without the head,” he said.

The attackers reportedly invaded the village in the early hours of Friday and unleashed mayhem on unsuspecting residents.

“Of the 19 persons that died, 13 are adults comprising seven males and six females, while six are children.

“The five persons injured have been taken to the hospital and are responding to treatment,” he said.

Ogunyanwo said that the attack is believed to be revenge-motivated as it came barely three days after the body of a missing Fulani boy was found.

The Commissioner said that five persons have been arrested over the missing Fulani boy.

He said, however, that no arrest had been made in connection with the recent attack on Friday.

Meanwhile, security personnel had been deployed to the affected area to forestall restore calm and order.

The Police Commissioner cautioned the people against further reprisal attack.
