The Akwa Ibom State Correspondent of the Punch Newspaper, Mr. Etim Ekpimah, has been released from police custody after being illegally arrested.
He was arrested earlier today while performing his legitimate duties.
Mr. Ekpimah, who spoke with our correspondent, Mr. Inibehe Effiong on phone called to conform that he has been released by the Police.
Mr. Ekpimah went to an accident scene in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State only to be arrested and taken to the station for interviewing the son of a tricycle operator that died from the accident.
He was reportedly arrested on the orders of the Divisional Police Officer of the area who was at the scene on mufti.
It is on record that Mr. Ekpimah has been threatened in the past by political actors in the State for carrying out his duties.
The seemingly compromised former Police Commissioner of the State, Mr. Gabriel Achong, had said that he cannot guarantee his safety.
Commenting on the circumstances of the arrest of Etim Ekpimah, Mr. Inibehe Effiong, a legal practitioner said:
“I condemn this lawless action by the Police.
“Press freedom is guaranteed under Section 22 of the 1999 Constitution.
“Journalists should not be harassed for performing their constitutional role as the watch dog of the society.
“The Ibesikpo Asutan DPO should be sanctioned by the Police authorities,” he concluded.
