At last DSS invites Gumi for questioning over alliance with bandits

The Department of State Services (DSS), on Friday, said it has invited Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, for questioning over his alliance with bandits.

DSS spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya said: “Sheikh Gumi was invited by the Service” in a post on a WhatsApp forum.

Dr. Afunanya added: “Gumi was invited by the Service,” noting that “It’s not out of place for the Service to invite any person of interest.”

However, he did not say specifically why Gumi was invited.

Sheikh Gumi has recently been tagged the mouthpiece of bandits in Nigeria as vehemently pleads the course of the criminals.

On one occasion, he promoted that amnesty should be extended to bandits, saying they were ‘forced’ into life of crime due to government neglect.

“When I listened to them, I found out that it is a simple case of criminality which turned into banditry, which turned into ethnic war, and some genocide too behind the scene; people don’t know,” Sheikh Gumi said.

On another occasion, Gumi alleged that some military operatives actively connive with bandits to wreak havoc on the country.

Yet in a separate statement, Gumi advocated that the bandits be treated with compassion as they are also victims of the Nigeria failures.

He said: “I think it is a population that is pushed by circumstances into criminality.

“And this is what we should look, let’s remove the pressure, let’s remove the things that made them into criminals because we have lived thousands of years without any problems with the nomadic herdsmen.

“They are peaceful people. But something happened that led them to this.”

Gumi has also visited some bandit groups in the forests where he took snapshots with them.

Other statements credited to the Islamic scholar include:

  • “No school is safe until govt negotiates with bandits”
  • “There will be no peace in Nigeria until Buhari negotiates with bandits”
  • “Bandits are ready, federal government must negotiate”
  • “Bandits are shy” -Sheikh Gumi

The development have prompted Nigerians to wonder if Gumi is really the spokesperson of the bandits.
