Biafra: Commercial Lessons We Can Learn from Apartheid

125

“Biafra can be commercialized, tourist can fly in from all around the world to learn about Biafra and this will greatly improve the economy of the south east states.” – Author

Two years ago while on holiday in South Africa, I visited the apartheid museum to see firsthand what apartheid was and is to South Africans. One thing I took away after the visit to the museum is; South Africans have moved on from apartheid and according to the tour guide, he said “Apartheid is gone and only belongs to the museum”.

Do you also know that South Africa makes millions of dollars annually from tourists who fly from all around the world to come and visit the apartheid museum and learn their history?

It is not as if all is well with the black South Africans but this people have found a way to bury their past and they have also succeeded in commercializing their past, their pains and their history to the greater good of all.

You need to see the commercial activities going on in Soweto, you need to see how many tourist that cue up just to enter Mandela house in Soweto, you need to see how hotels are fully and overbooked booked by tourists. To me, this is the way forward. We can tap into our Biafra history and make the world come see and learn about Biafra.

I was very happy when I saw the pictures of Made in Biafra products like shoes being sold in Lagos and Abuja markets and this is very commendable and creative. We can no longer continue in this age trying to pull ourselves back by trying to secede, trying to resurrect a dead man dream or trying to help someone achieve his selfish and evil agenda at the expense of all Igbo’s.

Biafra can be commercialized, tourist can fly in from all around the world to learn about Biafra and this will greatly improve the economy of the south east states. All around the world, nations who went through hard moments in their history like civil wars have found a way to move on and commercialized those memories. E.g. Germany has moved on after world war2 and the war museum in Germany is a beauty to behold.

The French, Irish, Slovakia etc have all benefitted from their past pains. Instead of unnecessary agitations and protest by my Igbo brothers, we can tap into our creative instinct, coming together to package Biafra in away tourists can’t resist. It is possible, the South Africans did it with apartheid and we can do same with Biafra.
