Breaking: Abdurasheed Maina, Son flee Nigeria
The former chairman of Pension Reform Task Team, PRTT, Alhaji Abdulrasheed Maina and his son, Faisal have fled the country to escape, Elomhah has learnt.
Maina is standing trial on a 12-count money laundering charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, was admitted to bail in the trial presided over by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Elombah has been reliably informed by sources familiar with Maina’s case that the former pensions taskforce chairman left Nigeria with his son and are probably now in the United States where they are both citizens.
As part of the bail conditions imposed by Justice Okon Abang, the two defendants were made to deposit their Nigeria and American passports with the court.
But the court did not quite understand the loophole in seizing the passports issued by foreign country without any formal agreement and notufycation process between Nigeria and the issuing country.
The source explained that while Maina was remanded in prison, he must have contacted a lawyer familiar with the United States laws who must have informed him that a Nigerian court could not effectively seize a passport issued by the United States Government.
The Source added that any United States Embassy will facilitate Mains’s return to the United States regardless of the seizure of his passport.
The Source also said that the American lawyer contacted by Maina must have explained to him that the the United States Embassy has a primary obligation to assist its citizens, and has no obligation to any Nigerian court.
