A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja, on Tuesday, ruled that the looters’ list released earlier in the year by the Federal Government does not violate the rights to be presumed innocence of those named until proven otherwise.
Delivering judgment in a suit filed by the proprietor of the African Independent Television and Ray Power Radio, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, the presiding judge, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi ruled that the suit lacked merit.
Chief Dokpesi had sought the court to declare the looters’ list as void.
Ruling, Justice Adeniyi stated that the disclosure of the alleged looters’ list by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on behalf of the Federal Government does not carry any force of law.
This, according to him, is because Lai Mohammed is neither the judge nor the prosecutor in the criminal case pending before the Federal High Court against Dokpesi.
The court held that Dokpesi should rather seek a remedy through a libel/slander suit if he is aggrieved by the perceived injury done to him.
The court, thereafter, adjourned the libel suit initiated by Dokpesi against the minister till November 9 for hearing of the substantive suit.
