The House of Representatives has, on Thursday, approved June 12 henceforth to be commemorated as Democracy Day in Nigeria.
The decision was taken to honour Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the presumed winner of the presidential election which held on June 12, 1993.
Lawmakers in the House adopted a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004.
The lawmakers approved the amendments to three clauses in the Act following which June 12 was adopted as Democracy Day while May 29 was deleted.
