Update: Bomb Blast in IDPs Camp Yola

According to Senior Information Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency [NEMA], Sani Datti, so far seven (7) persons lost their lives and twenty (20) persons were injured in the bomb blast that occurred in Malkohi Internally Displaced Persons camp Yola, Adamawa state.

Among the injured seven (7) were treated and discharged while thirteen (13) persons including four (4) NEMA officials are still receiving treatment at Federal Medical Center, Yola.

The Bomb, which was planted inside a Tent, went off this morning at around 10: 50am.

The Adamawa state commissioner of information, Ahmed Sajoh who confirmed the incident to journalists in Yola shortly after visiting the victims of the blast at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, said the dead has risen to seven and 13 including 4 NEMA officials injured.

Sajoh lamented that an unaccompanied toddler was among the dead victims just as he expressed sadness that even those on humanitarian service were not spared by the fury of the suicide bombers.

He further explained that one of the NEMA officials has already been treated and discharged while 2 others sustained minor injuries as even the one who sustained the most critical injury was responding to treatment.

The commissioner noted that governor Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla Bindow has directed the state emergency management agency to foot the bills of the medical expenses of the injured.

Sajoh added that the state government is working in conjunction with all security agencies to ensure a water tight security around all IDP facilities in the camp noting that the security is currently re- screening all the IDPs at the Malkohi camp.

“We have discussed with security agencies on how to fortify all the camps in the state and a re- screening of the IDPs is currently on going,” he said.

He added that the government will ensure that the security operatives analyzed the debris of the explosive device used as part of the process of arresting such ugly incident in the future.

Sajoh further noted that the explosion might have been a suicide bombing noting that the attack has amply portrayed that the fighting power and spirit of the insurgents have been seriously degraded.

He also urged residents to be extra vigilante and report suspicious persons to security personnel.

Confirming the incident, Adamawa state commissioner of police Gabriel Adaji noted that the police are said to be part of the rescue mission.

Similarly the Adamawa state camps coordinator National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mallam Sa’ad Bello said the explosion occurred around 10:50 am on Friday in one of the IDP tents adjacent to the food store of the camp.

Bello said he suspected that the explosion may be caused by a female suicide bomber adding that the bomber may be among the 298 IDPs brought to the camp from Madagali or the 17 IDPs brought from Sambisa forest on Thursday.

He added that all the injured victims have been taken to Federal Medical center for treatment.

Also confirming the incident, the representative of Red Cross Society on IDPs, Aliyu Maikano, the bomb was planted by unknown persons in one of the tents where some of the IDPs were living inside the Malkohi camp.

Maikano said the security was yet to uncover those behind the bomb blast.
