The Senate on Wednesday set up a committee to probe the alleged assault of a lady by Senator Elias Abbo in May.

Following the outrage generated by the video showing the senator assaulting a woman in a sex toy shop in Abuja, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has also ordered the arrest of the senator’s orderly by an investigative team set up by the Police Force headquarters in Abuja.

Investigations are currently ongoing at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command into the alleged attack on a sales girl by a serving senator in Abuja.

The Senator was seen on video assaulting the lady in a toy sex shop somewhere in Abuja on May 11, 2019 for allegedly abusing him.

Senate President Ahmed Lawan set up the committe, which has two weeks to submit it’s report.

The news of the attack went viral after a video recorded by the Close Circuit Television (CCTV), installed in the shop was shared on the social media, an act which is said to have embarrassed the police authorities.

Senate today commenced investigation into the allegations of assault raised against Senator Elisha Abbo Cliff .

Coming under point of order , Senator Uba Sani said the development has ridicule the image of Senate among the Nigerians.

He claimed to have received over 100 calls when the video of the assault surfaced in the social media.

Speaking on the motion, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele demanded for investigation into the matter to know the true situation.

After the deliberation on the point of order, Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan set up an Adhoc committee to investigate the matter within two weeks.

The Committee will be chaired by Senator Samuel Egwu, other members of the Committee are Oluremi Tinubu , Stella Oduah, Danladi Sankara , Matthew Urhoghide , Mohammed Sani Musa , Halliru Dauda Jika.

From The Office Of The Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan..
Following calls I received from within and outside the country, the condemnation of Nigerians and the points raised by my fellow colleagues, I have constituted an adhoc committee to investigate the allegation of assault preferred against Senator Elisha Abbo.
The constitution of the committee is in line with my resolve to lead a National Assembly that is not only responsible but responsive to the people we represent. The committee is expected to turn in its report within two weeks.

Meanwhile, the Police says they are doing everything within their powers to restore dignity to the force, following the conduct of the police orderly attached to the senator.

According to Police sources, the incident actually happened in a sex-toy shop in Abuja, where the senator had gone to make purchases.

The video which has been circulating on the internet shows the angry senator beat up the sales girl and ordered his police orderly to take her away.

The lawmaker representing Adamawa-North senatorial district, has told a newspaper the incident portrayed in the video showing him beating up a lady in a sex toy shop occurred in March 2019.

Abbo said this on Tuesday while responding to a question from The PUNCH.

He said he was putting a team together and he would give a response soon.

Abbo said, “Hello Eniola, I saw your message and I am aware of the report. I am putting my team together. I am aware that the thing happened around March this year but I will get in touch with you when we finish discussion. I am in a meeting now.”

Abbo had attracted criticisms from a large section of Nigerians after being caught on video slapping a nursing mother repeatedly at a sex toy shop in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja.

Abbo, who defeated the respected Senator Binta Garba, to emerge as the winner of the Adamawa North senatorial district, was seen assaulting the woman in a video posted by Premium Times

The assault, which reportedly occurred on May 11, 2019, was done in the presence of an armed policeman who rather than assist the victim, arrested her.

Abbo, who is the youngest senator in the country, had entered the shop around 6:00 p.m. on May 11, a Saturday. The senator walked in with three young women to purchase adult toys.

But shortly after they began shopping for the toys, one of the three ladies brought in by Mr Abbo started throwing up. She vomited multiple times, prompting the shop owner to remark that the woman should have vomited outside and not inside her shop, especially since she was not a child.

Abbo, who was said to be agitated by the sudden illness of one of the ladies, was said to have accused the shop owner of poisoning the store’s air conditioner.

The shop owner’s argument that if the air conditioner had been contaminated others in the shop would have also taken ill was said to have angered Abbo, and the two began exchanging words over the matter.

The senator was said to have called a policeman who he then ordered to arrest the shop owner.

The shop owner quickly called her father to inform him that Abbo had called the police over the matter and that she was about to be taken away.

The shop owner’s friend who had been standing nearby tried to intervene by pleading with the second man to take things easy but was slapped repeatedly by the lawmaker.

Meanwhile, the video has sparked outrage on social media.

On Twitter, the lawmaker is trending under #SenatorElishaAbbo.

Mr. Marcus tweeted, “You can see the motor park behaviour of a so-called Senator Elisha Abbo.”

Another Twitter user, Confidence Jonah, expressed shock that a policeman was complicit in the assault.
For Jack Obinyan, Abbo must be indefinitely suspended from the 9th National Assembly and prosecuted with immediate effect.

Muhd El-Bonga Ibrahim tweeted, “These are the kind of people we elect as lawmakers- shamelessly slapping a sales employee multiple times. This is an embarrassment not only to Senator Elisha Abbo but the Senate as an institution and he is currently the youngest. The committee on ethics needs to act.”
