President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday, 9th April 2020, granted amnesty to five ex-convicts among whom are late Professor Ambrose Alli, late Chief Anthony Enahoro, Ex Lt. Col Moses Effiong, Major E. J Olanrewaju, and Mister Ajay I. Olusola Babalola.

Observers however were quick to note that in 1965, Enahoro, Obafemi Awolowo and others were sentenced to 15 years Imprisonment for treason.

Enahoro appealed against His sentence and term was reduced.

He was eventually released in 1966, was pardoned and made a Federal Commissioner For Information and Labour by Gen. Yakubu Gowon in the same year.

Instrument of pardon: General Yakubu Gowon granted Anthony Enahoro a full pardon in 1966

According to the gazette, Enahoro was pardoned in 1966 along with Late Obafemi Awolowo , former governor of Lagos state, Lateef Jakande and Michael Omisade.

Commenting on the state pardon announced by Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola on Thursday, a historian who does not want his name in print told ElombahNews, “Enahoro after his pardon became the Minister Of Information from 1966 to 1975 in General Yakubu Gowon’s government”

Chief Enahoro joined active politics in 1979 and as a major player in the ruling National Party of Nigeria, with Alhaji Aliyu Shehu Shagari as President.

Emahoro died on the 15th of December 2010, at the age of 87.

He was given a state burial then President Goodluck Jonathan in January 2011, at his home town Uromi, Edo State .

Pooh-poohing Buhari’s decision, the historian noted, “This is the man the Presidency is granting posthumous pardon on 9th April 2020!”
