President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Super Eagles for the impressive win over the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Friday.
This was contained in a State House press release issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina.
The Super Eagles thrashed the Lions 4-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to Mr Adesina, the President joins millions of football-loving Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora in applauding the senior men’s football team for their disciplined, skillful and entertaining display against the defending African champions.
President Buhari noted that with the exhilarating victory, Nigeria is on the verge of qualification for the World Cup in Russia 2018.
He urged the players to sustain the momentum as they approach the crucial second leg of the tie in Yaoundé, on Monday.
The President enjoins Nigerians who always see football as a unifying platform, to continue to pray and support the team to guarantee victory next week and make qualification doubly sure.
He also commends the Akwa Ibom State Government for its continued support and provision of excellent hosting facilities.
On a sad note, however, the FC Ifeanyi Ubah team bus conveying players and officials to Ijebu Ode to honour the NPFL Matchday 36 fixture with Sunshine Stars billed for this Sunday, 3rd of September, 2017 was involved in a car accident along Benin/Ore expressway.
Six players sustained varying degree of injuries and two that are unconscious hitherto have regained consciousness and are receiving treatment presently at the closest medical facility near the site of the accident.
