Buhari’s body language has inspired change – by Obono-Obla

The argument of those saying that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has no social or economic or policy direction or has not inspired any change in the country six months after its inauguration is tenuous, weightless and totally and completely baseless.

How can you say a regime that encourages belt tightening or prudent measures such as the single treasury account and blockages of leakage and avenues for siphoning of money by the thieving and parasitic elite bureaucratic class has no economic direction or is rudderless?

How can any discerning mind suggest that a government that has through financial discipline upped the country’s Foreign Reserve from an appalling less than Five Billion Dollars to more than Thirty-Two Billion Dollars has no direction?

How can any objective person argue that a government that has somewhat greatly and miraculously improved electricity in the country to an appreciable level has no direction?

How can any fair-minded person who has seen that within six months the respectability and prestige of the country among the international community has been restored from a hitherto isolated and pariah status, has no policy direction?

How can we say a government that has restored the ethos of prudence, honesty and discipline in the chaotic and bloated federal bureaucracy has no social direction?

How can anybody argue that a government that has cancelled the former weekly meetings of the Council of Ministers of the Federation (also known as Federal Executive Council) where only mouth watering but phantom contracts were awarded has not brought change? How can we in all honesty say a government that has banned Ministers and public officials from living showy, ostentatious and flamboyant life styles has not inspired change in the country?

How we blindly and fatuously argue that a government that has cut down drastically: waste, corruption and financial in discipline has not brought change in the country? How can we say that a regime that unequivocally pledged to cut down on the cost of governance in the 2016 Budget is directionless or has not inspired change in the country?

Recall that for the past ten years almost 80 percent of the National Budget was devoted towards recurrent expenditure! How can we say that a regime that has changed the former mantle that corruption is not stealing has not brought change?

How can we truly say that a regime that has through its body language arouse the anti corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission; the Independent Corrupt and other Related Offences Commission and the Code of Conduct Bureau has not brought change? How can we say that a government that effected a change in the administration of justice sector to the extent that the powerful, influential and wealthy can be held accountable has no direction?

The truth of the matter is that the government is focused and has shown direction in so many ways. It is also a truism that we have seen changes in many aspects and respect in the country. But it is foolhardy for some of us to expect that the change will be so drastic and immediate after the locust of the past 16 years! Suffice me to say that there is marked progress in the change drive for all discerning minds.

Slow and steady wins the race. I am confident we are headed in the right direction!!!
