Buildings collapse kill one in Aba, three in Kano

Four trapped in Abia


A series of buildings collapse in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, and Kano, have left at least four persons dead with another four trapped beneath the rubble.

According to reports, a three-storey building under construction collapsed at Azikiwe Road, Aba, killing one person with others trapped..

The building reportedly collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday following a heavy downpour Tuesday night which lasted for hours.

Members of the Nigerian Red Cross Society arrived at the scene around past 8:00 am to search for trapped victims.

Confirmaing the incident, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. John Okiyi-Kalu said:

“The government received with sadness news of the collapse of the three-storey building, which was under construction in the early hours of today, and the Governor immediately directed relevant agencies to the location as well as mobilised earth moving equipment to the site on a search and rescue mission.

“So far, we have one confirmed fatality and those on site are working to see if there are others trapped in the rubble.”

In other developments, three persons also died after two buildings collapsed in Kano State.

In the first incident, two boys lost their lives at midnight when a building collapsed at Gwammaja Yan kwosai, Dala Local Government Area of Kano State.

Spokesperson of the State Fire Service, Saidu Mohammed, confirmed the incident.

Mohammed said all the 10 victims were rushed to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital.

According to him, four-year-old boy, Abdullahi Anass, and his six-year-old brother, Abdulmalik Anass, died at the hospital.

He said: “About 12:am, we got a distress call from Yan Kwasai in Dala Local Government Area that a one-storey building collapsed.

“Our rescue team rushed to the scene, and rescued 10 people, while we were told that eight others were still trapped in the building.”

He noted that the remains of the victim have been handed over to the Ward Head of Sango Buhari, Alhaji Yahaya.

In the second incident, a victim died when a building collapsed in Dawanu, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano, after heavy rain.
