CHAN 2016: Tunisia holds Super Eagles to 1-1 draw

The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw at the Stade Nyamirambo in Kigali on Friday by Tunisia in the ongoing CHAN 2016.

The Super Eagles have to wait till Tuesday’s final Group C match against Guinea in Gisenyi to make sure of a place in the 4th African Nations Championship quarter finals, after they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Stade Nyamirambo in Kigali on Friday.

Nigeria, 4-1 winners against Niger Republic on Monday, looked heavy in the opening minutes, though a fierce shot by Ifeanyi Mathew was almost deflected into the Tunisian net by a defender after seven minutes.

Mathew, Paul Onobi and Usman Mohammed were bright in the Nigerian midfield, but the quick feet of the Tunisians took them forward several times, and goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa was by far the busier of the two minders in the first half.

Former junior international Ezenwa saved well from Tunisia’s dangerman Ahmed Akaichi in the 14th minute, and pulled off another 13 minutes later as the Carthage Eagles stepped on the throttle.

Akaichi got the ball in the net a minute to recess, but referee Joshua Bondo ruled that the ball had crossed the line before it was pulled out for his powerful header.

Eagles’ ace Chisom Chikatara, who had come off the bench to score a hat –trick in 16 minutes on Monday, got Nigeria in front after 52 minutes when he powered home a good pass from Paul Onobi.

Tunisia equalized through Akaichi in the 70th minute, and they would have won it afterwards but the diligent Kalu Orji cleared off the line in the 77th minute and Ezenwa pulled off another huge save on the dot of regulation time.

On Tuesday, the Eagles take on Guinea in Gisenyi while Tunisia, on two points, play Niger Republic in Kigali.
