Chimamanda seeks justice for murdered Super TV CEO, Usifo Ataga
Award-winning author and world-renowned writer; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has weighed in on the gruesome murder of Super TV CEO, Usifo Michael Ataga calling on the Nigerian law enforcement authorities and investigators to ensure justice prevails.
It is on record that in June, 2021, the Lagos State Police Command paraded 21-year-old Miss Chidinma Adaora Ojukwu as the alleged murderer of Alex Usifo, claiming that he was a victim of a love crime.
In a recent post on her Instagram page, Chimamanda joined the outcry for justice for Usifo Ataga, asking those involved in the investigative process to thoroughly examine the case and ensure the perpetrators of the crime are brought to book.
In the video post, she shared the Order of Funeral Service for Ataga showing the heartfelt tributes written by family and friends, many of which were from his childhood.
“My sister-in-law has been Usifo Ataga’s friend since their days in Federal Government College, Warri. It was she who first told me that he was brutally murdered”, she disclosed in the caption.
“It is easy to forget in the scramble for clicks, in the frenzied spreading of rumours, in the hunger for the salacious and the outrageous, that actual human beings are involved.
“That this is a person who was loved by many people, including two daughters who now will be scarred for life.
“May justice be served. May his murderers be brought to justice. #justiceforusifo” she wrote.
Meanwhile, more facts related to the case have begun to emerge.
Douglas Aniemena, who was a close friend of Mr. Ataga’s, wrote to the Nigerian press.
He firmly stated that Ataga is not a drug user as opposed to Ms. Chidinma informing the press that she and Ataga had used drugs before his death.
“He was not stabbed 2 or even 5 times; he was stabbed multiple times.
“His hands were bound tightly, and the marks were still all over his wrists, accompanied with evidence of torture and assault even as his corpse lay in the morgue.
“And no one in the entire building heard his screams because he was gagged.
“The now-viral video of the room with the deceased lying on the floor, shows a room with blood-stained walls and floor, evidence of a ferocious struggle.
“One person could never have carried these out!”.
Aniemena also added that anyone who knew Ataga will attest that he cannot behave in such a manner as giving out his ATM card and pin number.
He added there is a limit on ATM withdrawals and Ataga can easily transfer the money (N380,000) to Ms. Chidinma.
“Usifo Ataga’s company had some substantial amount of money in an Escrow account, and the first attempt was to try and move the money.
“Was this done before or after Usifo Ataga had been killed?
“Then someone sent in instructions trying to change his banking security details, and that flagged up the account and the account was promptly blocked.
“The fact was that because these funds were in an Escrow account, torture Usifo Ataga all you wanted then, he simply could not, and was not able to move even a dime from the money even if he wanted to!
“Then, his money in another account was now moved to his account that they had his ATM card and then went on siphoning his funds. The speed and sophistication of these dealings were alarming,” Aniemena wrote in his opinion piece.
It was also revealed that apart from his home, Ataga had a house on Banana Island as well as friends who owned hotels and short-let apartments that could have served as a point of rendezvous rather than meeting with the alleged suspect in the short-let apartment arranged by Ms. Chidinma.
More devastating facts about the suspect were exposed by Aniemena.
“This is the same woman it has now come to the fore that at least on one occasion, 3 to 4 years ago, was arrested for blackmailing a married man and using an innocent security man’s back account to collect the money.
“She must have been at most, 18 years old then, if not younger!”.
With these being shared by Aniemena came to an absolute conclusion, “the facts in a nutshell tell us that, this incident was neither an accident, nor a drug fuelled sexcapade gone wrong!
“It was a premeditated, well set up conspiracy to murder.
“One person, however strong, could not have tied and gagged Usifo Ataga and then carried out all that was done, talk less of this woman,” he stressed.
Family, friends, colleagues, and people who have been in contact with Mr. Usifo before his demise, also called to question the claim that he was the victim of a love crime.
They have expressed their disappointment stating that the issues surrounding his death were much more than what was initially revealed to the public.
They also mentioned that there is a sinister campaign to tarnish Usifo’s public image.
“Usifo was such a private person, a true gentleman, who never tried to malign anyone. To see his character so publicly, willfully, and thoroughly besmirched…
“There appeared to be a concerted effort to mess my guy up and this felt so unfair…”, Douglas Aniemena shared his pain during his interview.
Reports also have it that his family and young daughters have also been traumatized by the negative stories created of the Super TV CEO.
In response to their cry for justice, the police recently provided an update to the public that more suspects in connection with the crime have been detained.
Usifo Michael Ataga was laid to rest on Friday, July 30, 2021, at Ebonyi Vaults, Ikoyi, Lagos amid tears and farewells by friends and loved ones who attended his funeral.
