*Obiano may join APC next week *It’s mere “April Fool” prank – party members
Strong indications have emerged today that the shocking announcement of suspension of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA)Mr Victor Oye on Thursday by the National Working Committee (NWC)of the party, has now thrown a big spanner in the works the party.
And as the shock waves reverberates, indications also show that the Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, who is the only surviving state executive on the party’s platform was already reviewing his membership of the party.
This was reportedly with a view to dumping APGA for the All Progressives Congress(APC), next week if his frantic moves to save Oye’s APGA job fails.
It was learnt from insider source within the NWC of the party who pleaded anonymity that efforts by Obiano through phone calls to stop Oye’suspension fell on deaf ears.
According to him, “to be fair to him(Obiano), he was calling us to stop the suspension, but nobody listened to him. Now what we are hearing is that the governor may join the APC to realize his reelection bid next year. If that happens, you know what that means to our party. Obiano is the only governor we have in APGA”.
But in another twist, Oye has dismissed the report of his suspension as a fluke masterminded in the social media by a gang of just three over ambitious members of the party.
According to him, “…there is no problem in our party, and nothing of such happened. We held our meeting which was properly conducted. After the meeting we heard that three persons went to press to write some nonsense.
“Is that normal, do you run party on the pages of WhatsApp? Did you read it from any paper? All those that called me I told them the true story.
“I held a world press conference in my office where I spoke on national issues, I did not talk about it because there is no matter to be raised.
“Our party is moving forward, we are preparing Ondo election and Abia local government and that is where I am focusing now, am not focusing on what three persons are doing.
But rising from its regular monthly meeting in Abuja earlier, the party’s NWC announced his immediate suspension for what it called “gross misconduct”.
The statement went further to allude the action to be in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, adducing constitutional breaches and inordinate practices of the chairman and other national officers.
Chief Jerry Obasi who is the deputy national Secretary of APGA had said that the suspension was necessary in order to save the party from impending destruction and reposition it for greatness. Hear him, “This given the circumstances surrounding the party under the leadership of the suspended chairman. Among others suspended were the deputy national chairman, (North), Alh. Abubakar Adamu and deputy national chairman (South), Chief Uchenna Okogbuo, who were allegedly indicted for several constitutional breaches.
Some of the allegations leveled against them included: “not involving NWC in making electoral regulations to given nomination/selection of candidates and not involving NWC in day to day running of the party, which violates article 12 (3) of the party’s constitution among others”.
A former Local Government Chairman in Enugu state,Chief Nwabueze Okafor was nominated the Acting national Chairman of the party.
But the Anambra state chairman of the party, Chief Nobert Obi, said he would not want to hastily comment on the issue now until the coast clears.
No other officer also would brook comment yet as they all saw the report as an “April Fool” prank.
However the state Publicity Secretary Mr Chinedu Nkwonta, in Awka, told journalists that there was no crisis in the party whatsoever. But was quick to admit there could have been disagreement or disenchantment within the ranks which was no well managed or well taken and it snowballed to the brouhaha we now see in the social media.
“We have taken note and are already working round the clock to tidy things up. But I must have to assert, there was no such thing as suspension of the national chairman”, he assured.
