Continued detention of Kanu may mar Nigeria, Ohanaeze warns

Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has warned that the continued detention of the Radio Biafra Director, Nnamdi Kanu [pictured above] by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) despite court rulings that he should be freed could spell doom to Nigeria.

OYC expressed shock that four days after an Abuja High Court gave order for his unconditional release, the authorities of the DSS had continued to hold him behind bars “in defiance to court orders”.

A press statement issued Sunday, by the National President of OYC, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro; and Secretary, Nnabuike Okwu, strongly condemned the attitude of the DSS over the detained Biafran activist.

OYC, therefore, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari, to prevail on the authorities of the DSS to free up the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the interest of peace.

According to OYC, the looming danger of renewed protests by Kanu’s followers, sympathisers and Biafran agitators is capable of consuming Nigeria and must be avoided.

OYC said that it might be difficult for it to again, calm Igbo youths whose patients were already running out over Kanu’s detention which they see as uncalled for.

The statement read in part: “We are pleading with the federal government to as a matter of sacrifice for the continued leave and unity of Nigeria to please release Nnamdi Kanu. This call has become necessary because it will be extremely difficult for us to continue to calm his followers and sympathisers whose see his detention as a provocation.

“President Buhari should help save the country from unnecessary tension by prevailing on the DSS to release Kanu since the courts have discharged and acquitted him.

“We know how many efforts it took us to prevail on IPOB and MASSOB members to stop their protests before the court ruling, and we don’t know what to tell them again as Kanu is still in detention four days after he was discharge by a court of competent jurisdiction “.

OYC also called on the international community to intervene and save Nigeria from plunging into other avoidable civil disturbances instead of coming with aids to refugee camps.

Ohanaeze also appealed to Biafran agitators and Igbo youths to remain calm as efforts were being intensified to secure freedom for Kanu.

“We call on all Igbo youths especially IPOB and MASSOB members as well as other Biafran agitators to resist the snare by the enemies of Ndigbo to again, turn Igbo soil into theatre of war.

“The destruction in the North East is what our enemies want to see happen in South East but we must collectively resist that. Some people are looking for an opportunity the likely protests that Kanu’s continued detention might spark to use war planes to send Ndigbo backwards again”.

“The recent killings of IPOB and MASSOB members in Onitsha by security agents as they jubilated over the court order for his release were a tip on the ice bag of the agenda of our enemies to decimate Ndigbo on the excuse of quelling uprising. To be forewarned is to be fore armed “.
