NFF President Amaju Pinnick has congratulated Nigeria’s Supersand Eagles for their second place finish at this year’s Copa Lagos.
The team which was composed largely with debutants bounced back from an opening day loss to the elephants of Cote d’Ivoire to win their remaining games against England and Lebanon.
‘I must confess I saw a team with a bright future as I understand the technical crew is building a fresh team,’ Pinnick said after the win over Lebanon.
‘They played with zeal and commitment. I believe the team will get better with time and we will retain our status on the continent’
Pinnick also praised the organizers of the annual event for a job well-done. ‘I can say for 5 years of its existence this tournament has always projected Nigeria for the whole world to see that it’s possible to have a world class event done successfully every year in Nigeria. I sincerely commend the organizers for this.’
The 7-4 victory for Nigeria over Lebanon had tension throughout but calmer nerves prevailed for the hosts as they used a big second period to roll to victory. The Nigerians struck first but there was a resiliency to the Lebanese side that many teams do not have.

Lebanon responded with their own rally to take a 3-2 lead but it was then the Sand Eagles turn to shift the tables, taking a lead at 4-3 which they would not relinquish.
Lebanon kept things interesting throughout and in the final minutes they scored again to keep Nigeria on their toes, but that would not be enough to change their fate. Nigeria was able to hold off most of the attacks and earn their second win of the weekend.
The triumph for Nigeria gives them six points as well and leaves them in second place at Copa Lagos. Lebanon won their opening match in Lagos but were not able to earn another win, however they did finish in the thick of things, in third place, among some great teams.
Cote d’Ivoire retained the trophy they won last year after recording wins in all three matches the team played at Copa Lagos 2015, while FC Barcelona won the club challenge.
The Supersand Eagles put up an improved display as the team earlier beat England’s Three Lions 8-6 at the ongoing Copa Lagos Beach soccer tournament at the Eko Atlantic Beach.
It was a tale of three halves with the first two going the way of the Nigerian team as they showed total dominance leading 7-1 when the buzzer for the end of the second half sounded only to concede five goals in the third half which almost saw England claw their way back into the game.
Abu Azeez, Emmanuel Owofere, and Odigbo Ifeanyi all scored a brace; other goal scorers were Emeka Ogbonna and Ogodo
Abu Azeez was the main man for the Eagles, his skills and technical ability was a delight to watch and he capped the day with a man of the match award.
