Court Orders Interim Forfeiture Of Mrs Jonathan’s Properties

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has, on Monday, ordered an interim forfeiture of two properties linked to former First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan.

The order followed an ex parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC].

The EFCC had, in an ex parte application filed in September last year, asked for interim forfeiture of the properties which it said were subjects of ongoing criminal investigation.

The presiding judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba dismissed Mrs Jonathan’s application that the case lacked merit.

Justice Dimgba ruled that the order will only last for 45 days within which he expects EFCC to conclude its investigations and charge the suspects linked to the properties.

He, however, added that the EFCC was at liberty to file an application for the extension of the lifespan of the order before the expiration of the initial 45 days.

It could also be recalled that the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, recently struck out a suit by the EFCC against the former First Lady bordering on money laundering of $5.3 million domiciled in Skye Bank Plc.

The court struck out the suit at the behest of the EFCC which applied for the strike out court action.

Also, the same Court, last month, struck out a forfeiture application by EFCC for the sum of $8. 435,789.84 million and N9.185, 327, 362 billion, allegedly linked to, Mrs Jonathan and six others.
