Court sentences Jumia agent’s killer to death

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has sentenced Sodienyem Mbatumukeke, the killer of Jumia delivery agent, Chukwuma Eleje, to death.

The presiding judge, Justice Chigozie Igwe ordered that Mbatumukeke be killed by hanging or firing squad.

According to the charge sheet, the convict killed the Jumia agent some four years ago when he delivered an iPhone ordered by Mbatumukeke to his house.

Rather than pay for the iPhone, however, he killed him and dumped his remains in a septic tank in the house.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Igwe found Mbatumukeke guilty as charged and slammed the death penalty on him.

The judge, who described Mbatumukeke as a “hardened criminal”, unremorseful, and undeserving of mercy, ruled:

““You are convicted for the murder of the Jumia delivery agent on March 25, 2017 and sentenced to die by hanging.

“You are to be tied hands and legs and hanged on your neck until you die, or by firing squad and may your sin be on your head.”

Mbatumukeke’s lawyer, however, vowed to appeal the judgment which he considered unacceptable.
