Covid-19: Uncertainty Trails Buhari state of health

...As more aides test positive

Nigerians have continued to express anxiety over the state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari following Coronavirus positive status of his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari.

ElombahNews has reported that Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, has tested positive to COVID-19 while President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo tested negative. The reports were neither confirmed nor denied by media aides of Mr. President.

Dear General Buhari,

You are not the one tweeting and facebooking. It is an assistant. Where are you? Don’t hide behind an assistant pretending to be you. Go on the NTA, that you wanted to spend $500 million digitising, and digitally speak to Nigerians! On March 10, 2010, you asked then President Umar Musa Yar’adua to resign over his ‘non appearance’ while Nigeria faced a crisis. Today, Nigeria faces a far bigger crisis. Her worst public health crisis in our history, Yet, Nigerians have not seen or heard from you for 5 days. We don’t want to hear from an assistant hiding behind a phone ~ Reno Omokri

There was also no comment from the presidency on media reports that the president is sick and coughing, until Thursday, when the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire opened up on the matter.

The Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari had tested positive to COVID-19 after returning from a trip to Germany and Egypt and had wide ranging interactions with top government officials at the Presidency and Nigeria power circle.

Ehanire simply stated one aide of the president’ aide tested positive to COVID-19 and is now undergoing treatment at a secured facility.

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina had earlier issued a statement that the President has  tested negative to the virus but did not disclose further details.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed while briefing newsmen denied media report that Mr. President has been coughing and is now on ventilator.

However, President Buhari has been in self isolation and up till the time of filing this report, Nigerians are still in the dark over the state of health of Mr. President who may have had body contact with his Chief of Staff.

Nigeria media is reporting that members of Federal Government’s Economic Advisory CCouncil are in self-isolation having recently met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

On March 17, 2020, the council met with Buhari and briefed him on economic matters. The Chief of Staff to the President, who had tested positive to COVID-19, was present at the meeting.

A member of the council, Professor Ode Ojuwu, confirmed the development to ElombahNews.

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 is yet to brief the media on the status of Kyari, but multiple sources told ElombahNews that Buhari’s chief of staff is at home in isolation. The sources also confirmed the President is self isolating, including from members of his family.

Abba Kyari, who is in his 70s, is an important figure in President Muhammadu Buhari’s government and his illness could have ramifications for the running of the country.

He is regarded as Buhari’s lynchpin and head of the “cabal” running the country.

His case was one of a growing number in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, with two state governors and dozens of legislators also testing positive and the Lagos state health commissioner warning that they were beginning to see the virus “spread in the community”.

Kyari had travelled to Germany early March with a delegation of other Nigerian officials for meetings with engineering and industrial giant Siemens AG.

Germany has reported some 27,000 cases of coronavirus and 114 deaths from the pandemic.

Three aides to the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Abba Kyari, have also tested positive for coronavirus.

It was gathered that other members of staff in Kyari’s office have been asked to self-isolate.

Analysts have expressed surprise at the loud silence from the state house saying that “in other countries across the world, the Coronavirus status of President or Prime Minister will be made available to public”.

Reacting to the anxiety,  the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged President Buhari to douse anxiety by addressing the nation immediately on the status of the presidential villa in relation to COVID-19.

The party said its demand is predicated on concerns about health safety issues in the villa, following reports that Abba Kyari tested positive to the virus.

In a statement by its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said: “An address on the situation in the Presidential Villa will further douse public concerns about the status of certain key officials, who have not been visible in the last few days.”

14 new cases of #COVID-19 have been confirmed in Nigeria: 2 in FCT, 12 in Lagos.

Of the 14, 6 were detected on a vessel, 3 are returning travellers into Nigeria and 1 is close contact of a confirmed case

As at 8:35 pm 26th March, there are 65 confirmed cases , 3 discharged and 1 death.
