Dead newborn found in Bayelsa, as 9-month-old girl rescued in Ebonyi

A dead newborn boy has been discovered at a dump site in front of a primary school in Okaka Community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Men of the Bayelsa State Environmental Sanitation Authority (BESA) disclosed this on Saturday, noting that the baby may have been abandoned the night before for lack of resources to carter for the child.

BESA personnel monitoring the monthly sanitation exercise in the state visited the scene of the incident and condemned the act.

BESA Director, Comrade Ebitto Alazigha, who led the team, enjoined residents to always monitor their neighbours on what they take to dump sites.

He said that the authority would put measures in place to check such menace in the future.

Chairperson of the Bayelsa State Gender Response Team (GRT) and founder, Do-Foundation, Barr. Dise Ogbise, blamed the ugly development on poverty and promiscuity amongst young girls.

Barr. Ogbise urging young women who have difficulties in taking care of their babies to contact her office rather than taking innocent lives.

Describing the act as illegal, she warned that if the perpetrators are caught, they would be arrested for murder, prosecuted and jailed.

Police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said the Police are investigating the incident.

He said the command had already contacted the sanitation authority to evacuate the corpse of the child.

In another development, the Ebonyi Command of the Nigerian Police Force said it has rescued an abandoned nine-month-old baby in the state.

The baby, a female, was abandoned by the riverside at Ezzilo community, in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on Friday.

It was gathered that a farmer alerted the Ishielu Police Division, who rescued the baby.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Loveth Odah, stated this in a statement on Saturday.

Mrs. Odah said that that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aliyu Garba, had directed that adequate medical attention should be given to the baby.

The statement reads: “The Ebonyi State Police Command, today 27th August 2021, at about 0915hrs, rescued a nine-month-old female child that was abandoned at Ebonyi Riverside-Ezzillo Community in Ishielu LGA of Ebonyi State.

“The baby was sighted by a farmer who alerted the Police operatives attached to Ishielu of the Command before she was rescued and handed over to the gender unit of the State Police Command.

“The Commissioner of Police Ebonyi State Command, CP Aliyu Garba, psc, has directed that the baby be accorded proper medical attention and taken to a government facility for custody and proper care.

“The CP assures the general public that the Command will continue to collaborate with all the relevant government agencies and non-government bodies in fighting against this inhuman act and other social vices in Ebonyi State.”
