At this rate, we have to humbly invite the management of Awka Capital Development Authority (ACTDA) – who are by the way doing a great job – and Awka South Local Government Council to look into the smelly greenish water that has made itself the Afu Nze Ebie Okwu 1 of Eke Awka, Awka, Anambra State.
Desilting the drainage and rechanneling the water into it won’t be sufficient. Government must find out the source of the waste water.
If it’s coming from a private or public building, owner(s) of the property must be forced to dig a sewer and channel the waste water into it.
If it’s coming from a fish farm, the owner must be forced to recycle the water by channeling it into a nearby farm where the water will both irrigate and manure the farm.
If it’s coming from a natural source, government must find out at what point exactly the water gets contaminated, and possibly cut off the contaminant.
The hazards of that dirty and atrociously smelly water openly flowing in such a busy part of the city should be well-known. I don’t want to talk about the ‘mama-puts’ and other such concerns that conduct their businesses right on top of the smelly water. Not a word for their customers.
I also invite the government to seriously frown upon channeling of waste water from kitchens and bathrooms into streets and gutters as is now the case in some parts of Onitsha and Nnewi. I also invite the government to get interested in how operators of restaurants and fast food joints dispose their liquid wastes.
Existing regulations must be enforced. New ones should be promulgated if need be. There is a growing population. An epidemic is doing press-up right in front of us. We shouldn’t allow it to happen.
