Do You Believe That This Super Eagles Jersey Is A Harbinger Of Bad Luck?

By Iregbenu Paul

With Super Eagles cruelly condemned to a painful defeat, dealt by Algerian Riyad Mahrez in the dying minutes of the Afcon 2019 semifinal match, many Nigerian fans have not wasted time in forming the opinion that the green jersey worn by their team is the cause of their defeat.

This opinion must have been formed after a run of losses experienced by the Super Eagles wearing the dark green jersey. The Super Eagles wearing these dark green jerseys fell to an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Croatia in their 2018 World Cup’s first match.

Another defeat to the Argentines in their third 2018 World Cup game, which Nigeria controlled, seemed to support this opinion. Coming to this Afcon, the two losses (against Madagascar and Algeria) meted on the Super Eagles have been with the dark green jerseys worn by them.

Superstitious as this opinion may be, many Nigerians hold tenaciously to it. This is laughable. If the dark green jersey is a harbinger of bad luck, it then means that Nigerians were hoping on luck to favour them against a technically balanced team like Algeria, and were quick to forget that there is a limit to where luck can take the Super Eagles.

There is no gainsaying the fact that from the beginning of the tournament, the performances of the Super Eagles have not been inspiring despite the victories that brought them thus far.

Couple with the foregoing is how tactically inept and predictable the Super Eagles coach was, then you have the reason why the Super Eagles lost the game yesterday.

Nigerians should even be happy that the team did not concede more goals judging by how shambolic the Super Eagles were yesterday and how the Algerians ruthlessly exposed the glaring cracks in the team that has been written over for so long.

There is a need to revamp the Super Eagles; an overhaul which includes getting rid of the incompetent and clueless coach and disposing of few players who were inept and don’t deserve to be in the team.

Are you not just fed up with this “bad luck jersey” hoopla?
