…bemoans unfulfilled promises by APC
The irrepressible National Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie has urged government and citizens not to panic whenever they hear the name Biafra.
According to him, it’s a body of law abiding citizens guided by both the Nigerian constitution and International laws.
Chief Okorie made the plea during his opening remarks at UPP 2017 National Convention held the Emmaus House Complex auditorium, Awka, the Anambra State capital.
He explained that the United Nations charter recognizes indigenous people and the Nigeria constitution does the same, adding that before the contraption of Nigeria, the country was made up of mainly indigenous people and empires.
He acknowledged that it was in recognition of this that UPP upgraded its aims and objectives in Article 6 of the party constitution, while chapter two of the party’s manifesto emphasized- “our main policy trust in Self Determination, True Federalism, Devolution of Power, Resource Control, Referendum, State Police/Community Policing, Citizenship Rights, Unconditional Release of Prisoners of Conscience etc”.
He said, “Let nobody be afraid when he hears Biafra or associated with it because Nigeria has indigenous peoples. Nobody should be afraid of saying he is a Biafran. If people embrace UPP core values, those issues that pose threat of disintegration of Nigeria will disappear.
“This convention observed international best practices. It went very successful and commendable. I therefore wish to commend members for their exemplary conduct during the proceedings”, Okorie observed.
The well attended Convention, the national chairman pointed out, enabled the party to ratify some motions that he admitted have “put our great party in the firm position to tackle the challenges of our present and future democratic encounters in Nigeria and a more efficient management of the party’s internal democratic process”.
The amendments included Article 10 (4) (xii) of the party Constitution to expand the delegates to state congresses and ratification of harmonized national, zonal, state, local government and ward working committees of the party pending the next election convention of the party.
He noted that “Nigeria is dire need for genuine change having been politically defrauded by the All Progressives Congress(APC), a political party that canvassed True Federalism while it sought for votes of trusting Nigerians but in a very unscrupulous and unconscionable manner jettisoned its avowed article of faith, and foisted on hapless Nigerian citizens the worst form of nepotism, reductionism, lethargy, cluelessness and retrogression” Okorie added.
In an interview with journalists at the Convention arena, Okorie emphasized that UPP core values were mainly what Nigerians have decided on but what political parties are shying away from.
The party also used the Convention to unveil its eight governorship aspirants for the November 18,2017 Anambra state’s gubernatorial poll. The aspirants used the opportunity to address the members, expressing high optimism that the party would carry the day in the November 18, 2017 Governorship election. They also took turns to reel out their planned life transforming programmes for the state, if elected.
The aspirants included the former Aviation Minister-Chief Osita Chidoka; former member of the Federal House of Representatives -Chief Chudi Offodile; Chief Ifeanyi Okonkwo; Prince Ifeanyi Ezechukwu; and Nze Ugonadi Onwuka; Ejike Okafor Obumeneke; Barr Paul Chukwudi Obianaso
