The president of the United States of America, Mr Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart have finally met face-to-face at the ongoing G20 summit.
There had been heightened anticipation over the stands of the two world leaders especially regarding the Syrian conflict which has been going on for years.
Trump had expressed desire to work with Putin but their contrasted positions on matters involving Syria, Iran and Ukraine makes it a near impossible task.
Moscow’s alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election has only helped but to fuel the already burning tension, an allegation Moscow has vehemently denied.
Taking to his Twitter handle, Trump wrote tweet on Friday:
“I look forward to all meetings today with world leaders, including my meeting with Vladimir Putin. Much to discuss.
“I will represent our country well and fight for its interests!”
The meeting is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. local time.
A G20 working session on climate and energy will precede the meeting.
It could be recalled that Trump had pulled the United States out of the Paris accord on climate change, a decision which, no doubt, angered world leaders.
Trump had, on Thursday, won accolades from Republican as well as Democrats in the U.S. Congress over his speech in Warsaw.
During the speech, he told Russia to stop its “destabilizing activities” and end its support for Syria and Iran.
“This is a great start to an important week of American foreign policy,” said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, an adept critic of Trump, especially on security matters.
Trump, meanwhile, had declined to say definitively whether he believed U.S. intelligence officials that claimed Russia interfered in the 2016 election.
“I think it was Russia but I think it was probably other people and/or countries, and I see nothing wrong with that statement.
“Nobody really knows. Nobody really knows for sure,” Trump had said at a news conference.
