The Nigeria Labour Congress joins family, friends, government and people of Anambra State, and the entire people of Nigeria in mourning the demise of the former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Alex Ekwueme.
Dr Ekwueme was a distinguished Architect, intellectual, affable politician, a credible personality and a respected elder statesman rolled in one.
His death rubs not just the political class but the Nigerian nation, the wise counsel of one among a few who have seen it all.
His death represents a curtain call on (not a final one though) the second Republic politicians, much villified for the excesses but whom history mercifully redeemed by the more daring excesses of successor rulers or politicians.
We make bold to say that even when it was a patriotic act to condemn the Second Republic politicians, Ekwueme was a jewel in the pack as he was neither found wanting in government nor by the probe panel setup by the soldiers that overthrew that government. Indeed, of him it was said that he left government poorer than he joined it.
Ekwueme was a remarkable man. In spite of what not a few considered were odds carefully stacked against him by a section of a predatory and acquisitive political class, Ekwueme came back into the race after each failure.
And although, he did not pick up the number one job in his life time, it did little to diminish his standing in the polity.
The least that could be done in memory of this gentleman is to imbibe his endearing personal qualities.
Comrade Ayubba Wabba, mni
