The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has on Saturday, September 5, 2020 conducted its primary election for aspirants vying to fly the Party’s flag in the forthcoming bye-election on October 31, 2020. Only two aspirants, Hon. Patrick Ndubueze, and Chief Emmanuel Okewulonu participated in the primary election after they were earlier screened and cleared by the Party as qualified.
At the end of the very peaceful, free, fair and credible voting by the delegates from the six Local Government Areas and 64 electoral wards in Okigwe Zone, Chief Emmanuel Okewulonu won the highest number of votes and emerged the PDP candidate for the bye-election. He scored 609 votes as against the 27 votes scored by Hon. Patrick Ndubueze. There were a total of 659 accredited voters, total of 635 valid votes and 23 invalid votes.
The results were announced by Hon. Barr. Chuba Oranusi, Chairman of Primary Election Committee from the National Working Committee (NWC), Abuja. He also declared Chief Emmanuel Okewulonu as the winner of the primary election, and candidate for PDP in October 31, 2020 bye-election.
The primary election, which was held at the Party Secretariat of Isiala Mbano PDP, was observed by officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Commission (NSCDC). Also present as observers were members of the Taskforce Committee appointed by the Party for the primary election.
The State Working Committee (SWC) was duly present and led by the State Chairman, Engr. Charles Ugwuh, including the State Deputy Chairman, Sir Martin Ejiogu; State Secretary, Hon. Nze Ray Emeaña; State Women Leader, Hon. Chief Mrs. Maria Mbakwe; State Organizing Secretary, Nze Law Biaduo; State Auditor, Hon. Chief Godson Nwaobasi; State Financial Secretary, Barr. Bede Ojimadu; State Legal Adviser, Barr. Kissinger Ikeokwu; and State Publicity Secretary, Ogubundu Nwadike.
With the emergence of Chief Emmanuel Okewulonu as the PDP candidate in the bye-election, Imo PDP has regrouped and closed ranks for the necessary campaigns as a united Party that is poised and very prepared to win the October 31, 2020 bye-election, and reclaim the senatorial seat that was stolen from the PDP in the previous election.
