#EndSARS protest: Anambra governor sacks SARS hit-man
By Chima Christian
- The top of our protest demands to the Governor of Anambra State during the #EndSARSProtestAwka today was to immediately relieve James Nwafor of his duties, initiate an inquest, and upon finding reasonable grounds, initiate criminal proceedings against him. We extracted a firm commitment from Governor Willie Obiano today that James Nwafor will be fired and prosecuted. (see attached video below).
The allegations against CSP James Nwafor (rtd) are weighty. There are scores of (unverified) eyewitness reports about extra-judicial killings either personally executed by him or done at his behest.
It will be recalled that he was the Officer in Charge of SARS, Awkuzu when the lifeless bodies of tens of young men were dumped in Ezu River. The allegations of inhumane tortures and rape are pilling up against him even as more and more people are beginning to find their voices.
Despite these allegations, the Government of Anambra State appointed him a Special Adviser on Security. We find this to be a slap on the face of justice.
That is why the top of our protest demands to the Governor of Anambra State during the #EndSARSProtestAwka today was to immediately relieve James Nwafor of his duties, initiate an inquest, and upon finding reasonable grounds, initiate criminal proceedings against him.

As at now, he hasn’t been officially relieved of his duties. What we have is only the Governors words. We await an official letter from the SSG either this evening or tomorrow to that effect. We also implore Anambra’s Ministry of Justice or concerned civil society groups to follow-up with a criminal proceeding.
In his heydays, James allegedly told a weeping family “I killed your brother and nothing will happen.” Well, it seems that that “nothing” waited for him to retire and then dragged him out of retirement to happen.
But James is not an outlier. For example, In 1994 a SARS official allegedly shot and killed a Level-1 student of UNILAG for participating in a protest. That officer has retired, is now collecting his pension and is also an Oba (king) in his hometown. Another officer extra-judicialy killed an innocent youngman, and he’s not even denying it. He is currently serving as an Assistant Commissioner of Police, waiting to be promoted to become a Commissioner of Police, while the victimed remains 6 feet under and his family has found no closure at all.
The stories are endless, and that’s why we are CONTINUING with the protests. You cannot say that you have ended SARS whereas you fail to address the injustices and terror it left in its wake.
By the time we are done, no Nigerian, be it SARS, SWAT, Counter-Terrorism, Anti-Cult, Army, or any thing in-between, can open his/her mouth and say to another Nigerian “I’ll waste you and nothing will happen.”
For SARS to truly end actions must have consequences.
Her Excellency Ebelechukwu Obiano, the wife of the Governor of Anambra State, should, in honour of the prevailing mood of many youths across this state and beyond, be encouraged to postpone the remainder of her ongoing LG tours.
Anambra has a long history with the issue being discussed, with the Ezu River incident possibly the most chilling story on Police brutality to date.
I implore Her Excellency and her handlers to be a little bit more sensitive. Dozens of Anambra Youths are joining their peers across vast parts of this country protesting the inadequacies of the current policing structure.
Children that watched in agony as their loved ones’ corpses were retrieved from Ezu River are part of the people presently under the rain at the Government House wa…
