A group, Igbo Renaissance Forum has called for the investigation of former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Oduah for the shoddy rehabilitation of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu state.

The International Coordinator of the group, Nze Ugo-Akpe Onwuka while featuring on Elombah TV virtual interview, wondered how the airport runway that was supposed to last for at least 15 years became the most dangerous Airport in Nigeria, barely 6 years after commissioning.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned the remodelled Akanu Ibiam International airport, Enugu in May 2013 when Senator Oduah was the Minister of Aviation.

But last year the Federal government shut down the Airport barely six years after it was commissioned.

Speaking about the shoddy job done at the Airport in 2013, Onwuka said all the government officials involved in the airport rehabilitation in 2013 should be investigated and possibly prosecuted, including the contractor, PW Nigeria Limited.

He said, “I was in “focus Nigeria’ on AIT and I stated that PW is the same company that constructed the runway that collapsed in five years, and the government still brought back the same PW, and the Construction company keeps drinking ‘Akamu’ on the same job.

“Why is it that PW has not been probed, every governments official that got involved in that airport construction in 2011 should be on the hot seat as we speak, from the Minister to the least person, they should be answering questions.

“A runway that would have lasted for 15 years became the most dangerous airport in Nigeria by the standard of those who shut it down, and they are still working free on the streets, you will find that is why corruption will never go away from this clime.

“If people commit such things and they are still in office or they are still moving around as respectable persons, then we need to start asking ourselves some questions.

“If people who constructed the Airport are still holding political positions, then we need to start examining ourselves as a country.”

Talking about the newly commission runway, Onwuka said that there is nothing international about the airport.

According to him, “as far as I am concerned there is nothing international about Enugu Airport, it is still a local airport, that is the best way to describe it, until we see those things that makes an international airport.”
