Ex-Heads Of State—IBB, Gowon, Shonekan, Obasanjo, Jonathan Avoid Buhari’s Democracy Day
All former Heads of State including General Yakubu Gowon, President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida [IBB], Chief Ernest Shonekan, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and the amiable Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan refused to show up for the June 12 Democracy Day celebration held on Wednesday by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
This happened for the first time in the history of Nigeria.
Also absent at the event were former Vice presidents including Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Arch Namadi Sambo, General Theophilus Danjuma, et al.
Meanwhile, it be recalled that former President Olusegun Obasanjo and other past presidents were conspicuously missing during the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term in office.
Absent at the occasion also were General Ibrahim Babangida, former head of transition government, Ernest Shonekan, the immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, and Abdulsalam Abubakar.
The only former Head of State that honoured the event was General Gowon.
In this latest occasion, however, even Yakubu Gowon stayed away.
In the words of an analyst with ElombahNews, it is like “lifeless Buhari is being avoided like a plague by past leaders”.
