A former militant leader, Eshanekpe Israel, aka, Akpodoro, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the planned forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission [NDDC].
Israel revealed that members of the NDDC board in the past saw the Commission as a cash cow where, once appointed, such a person becomes inexplicably a multi billionaire with no clear means of livelihood outside his appointment.
According to the ex-militant leader, past management boards of NDDC may have compromised the regional good but he added that the immediate past management board that produced a gubernatorial aspirant for one of the Niger Delta states was the worst in the history of the Commission saying that apart from poor service delivery, that board dealt a deadly blow to the treasury of the agency and recklessly too.
Akpodoro wondered why the clearance of waterways in a region that is bedeviled by creeks and her people remaining as subsistent farmers in fish and crops will be an issue to be determined by those whose stock in trade is to loot the agency dry at the detriment of the region.
Akpodoro made this disclosure in a press release written and signed by him, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent in Abuja, Tuesday. He also called on all stakeholders in the region to support the presidential directive noting that such will bring out the best and reposition the developmental agency for productivity in line with its mandate.
Akpodoro who is the national President of National Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-Agitators, NCNDEA said, the activities of the NDDC over the years was long overdue for a forensic audit and thorough investigations but for lack of political will by successive governments in the past saying, the lackadaisical attitude of past administrations aided in no small measure the poor performance and service delivery of the Commission.
A forensic audit he stated, will unravel the crimes of few Niger Deltans who put developments of material and human resources in the region in permanent reverse gear for their selfish interests wondering why the FG waited this long before taking the latest decision but was quick to note that; later was better than never.
The audit, he noted should cover both employments into the NDDC in addition to the finances saying the managers of the board undoubtedly rode roughshod on the collective good and sensibilities of the people taking advantage of the ignorance and gullible nature of most supporters of sleaze in the region.
“They blare sirens as soon as they are appointed, parade large number of joint security personnel, harass and intimidate the people they were supposed to develop and ultimately jettison the need for genuine development in the region.
“Few roads constructed by the agency are narrow without standard drainage system yet, engineers are appointed to oversee projects, the region remain poorly electrified, they award inflated contracts to themselves by proxies, to concubines and few youths who are in their good books… they are enemies of the people and shall be so dealt with…” Akpodoro stated.
The former militant said that when inaugurated, the Pius Odubu-led board will rewrite the narratives of the agency in its productivity and quality service delivery as he called on the FG to expedite the process of inaugurating the new board without further delay.
