FG, Other States Urged To Emulate Gov. Ugwuanyi
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Enugu State has charged the Federal and State Governments to emulate the people-centered and inclusive governance, which Gov. Ugwuanyi has entrenched in Enugu State irrespective of political or religious affiliations.
The Enugu State President of the pan-Igbo organization, Hon. Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, gave this charge in Enugu recently while fielding questions from journalists after the monthly meeting of the organization.
On the performance of Enugu State since the emergence of Gov. Ugwuanyi, Chief Ogbonnia expressed satisfaction with the various policy initiatives taken by the Governor since his inauguration for a second term in office, describing the Governor as a visionary leader.
Chief Ogbonnia remarked that Ohanaeze is the conscience of the people, with a moral responsibility to extol our leaders when they perform creditably as well as admonish them when they veer off the mark.
He commended Governor Ugwuanyi for the proactive measures he took in addressing the insecurity that reared its ugly head recently in the state. Such steps include the establishment of the Forest Guards with initial strength of 1700 men; the reorganization of the Neighbourhood and Vigilante organizations in the State; the purchase of 100 Innoson Hilux vans, 260 vehicles and motorcycles for use by the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC); installation of automated drones for surveilance, among others, for security operations in the state.
Ogbonnia also commended Ugwuanyi for leading the way to Innoson Motors and urged the Buhari-led Federal Government and other State Governments to emulate Governor Ugwuanyi in patronising locally manufactured goods.
This, according to Chief Ogbonnia, is the sure way to retrieve Nigeria’s economy from total collapse; hinting that “the ripple effect of patronising locally made products is not only in the conservation of scarce foreign exchange but a direct confrontation of unemployment therby exiting Nigeria from the poverty capital of the world.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo frowns at the policy ambivalence of closing Nigerian borders to rice importation while the foreign exotic cars are given the right of entry. This is hypocrisy at it’s best.
The President lauded the Governor for his rural infrastructural revolution; participatory democracy, especially the unconventional model of allowing various local government areas to make inputs in the selection of commissioners in the state; reign of peace in the state and the enthronement of an era of we-feeling among the major political gladiators in Enugu state. This is an unprecendented socio-political paradigm in Enugu State.
Chief Ogbonnia stressed that for democracy to thrive in any society, there must be a heart for tolerance, forbearance and sacrifice. The twin value of democracy and peace, he noted, is a sine-qua-non for liberty, sound initiatives, creativity, healthy competition, free entrepreneurial spirit and prosperity. Thus, the Ugwuanyi paradigm accounts for the high rate of land acquisition by even the non-indigenes of Enugu state in search of peaceful settlement. This is one of the soft copy benefits of the Ugwuanyi approach to governance.
Another area that is imperceptible to the uninitiated is the quantum leap in the quality of education in the state. Most recently, the Federal Ministry of Education conducted a nationwide assessment of infrastructure, e-library,quality teaching and learning in Nigerian public secondary schools.
It is heartwarming that the Model Secondary School, Nsukka emerged the overall winner for the 2019 exercise. In addition, a few weeks ago, Governor Ugwuanyi awarded scholarships to 22 students to study at the prestigious Dewar University, India; 680 indigent engineering students at the Enugu State Polytechnics, Iwollo, also benefit from the Ugwuanyi scholarship program, among others.
The group expressed delight that since his assumption of office as a governor, every Christmas season, Ugwuanyi sends luxurious buses to the northern and western states of the country to bring home several Enugu state indigenes for celebration with their loved ones.
Ohanaeze also noted with delight that the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Ituku-Ozalla singled out Governor Ugwuanyi for an award of Good Governance in the Health Sector. This is one of the strings of awards by several unbiased corporate bodies in various core governance strata. The Ugwuanyi approach has gained national reckoning with awards of excellence from four oustanding national dailies; The Sun, Vanguard, Independent and Leadership. All these are eloquent testimonies to his humility, humane dispositions, prudent resource management, selfless service delivery and leadership examplariness.
