Forget infighting, work on rising poverty, insecurity – Huriwa to NASS

Huriwa called legislators & Executive branch of govt to sheath the swords and allow the lawmakers work on practical legislations to overcome recession

*Asks Buhari to end political litigation against Senate’s Leadership

As members of the National Assembly are set to resume from a month long recess tomorrow, a call has gone to the legislators and the Executive branch of government to sheath the swords and allow the lawmakers work on practical legislations and engage in qualitative oversight functions in the Federal Ministries to overcome Nigeria’s economic recession.

The political class has therefore been reminded by the Pro-democracy Non-governmental organisation – Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (Huriwa) of   the National Emergency that they ought to be  pursued collectively as elected office holders in the area of tackling the excruciating poverty levels afflicting millions of Nigerians  and confront  the expanding frontiers of insecurity and killings of innocent Nigerians by armed hoodlums of different hues.

In a media statement endorsed jointly by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf, Huriwa specifically urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Secretary to the government of the Federation and the Federal Attorney General and Minister of Justice to end all politically motivated litigations against the leadership of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the Code of Conduct Tribunal and the High Courts.

The Rights group said that the subsisting cases in the Code of Conduct Tribunal under an ethically challenged Chairman Umar Danladi and the forgery matter at the Abuja High Court against both the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu must be withdrawn because they are such a bad intentioned distractions capable of derailing any constructive pursuit of solution through law making mechanisms of a rapid end to the crippling economic downturns.

According to HURIWA; “those are unnecessary distractions that could impede the total commitments of the legislators at the National Assembly to more vigorously pursue a broad- based legislative approach to help Nigeria rapidly overcome the rampaging Economic Recession sweeping across the Country with the concomitant consequences of mass poverty, hunger, unemployment and hyperinflation that have overwhelmed millions of Nigerians since the last four Months”.

Turning to the Federal House of Representatives the Rights group has called for truce and for stability of leadership so the green chamber of the National Assembly can more constructively confront the biting economic downturns.

HURIWA has also condemned the excessive inclination by a member of the House of Representatives Abdulmumin Jibrin to cast aspersions in the media against the properly constituted hierarchy of the Federal House of Representatives with the clear agenda to destabilise the leadership and foist bootlicking and sycophantic leadership that would be subservient to the Executive branch of government.

HURIWA also called for restraints and social responsibility on the part of the media, the fourth estate of the realm on the publications  of highly explosive and unsubstantiated allegations against the House leadership.

They condemned the continuous stoking of embers of discord by the dismissed Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation Alhaji Abdulmumin Jibrin who has continued to inflict spectacular media distractions against the hierarchy of Mr. Speaker Yakubu Dogara since he (Abdulmumin Jibrin) was booted out of the juicy committee over alleged official  indiscretions relating to his former assignments with regards to the 2016 federal budgets in which allegations of paddings were raised.

HURIWA has therefore tasked the Nigerian people to protest against any subterranean plots by the disgruntled erstwhile Appropriation Committee Chairman to destabilise the leadership of the Federal House of Representatives hiding under the guise of some nebulous whistle blowing activities against the holder of the office of Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives.

The Group has asked both Representative Abdulmumin Jibrin and the House leadership to allow tranquility and stability to reign in the National Assembly because these “times of economic recession calls for all hands to be on deck to salvage millions of our people from life threatening hunger and national economic calamity”.

HURIWA said Nigerian people should embrace the participatory roles in government accorded them by the tenets of the Constitution by demanding that individuals in both the Executive and legislative branches of government who would continue to pursue vendetta and political witch-hunts are named and shamed and if possible recalled or impeached for peace to reign and for the battered national economy to be resuscitated without further delay.

“Nigerians should demand for stability of National Assembly leadership  and efficiency in law making processes in the Country and condemn all the politically motivated trials instituted by the Executive arm of the current government against the leadership of the Senate for selfish reasons.

“The elevation of pettiness and demagoguery  as states craft is hereby condemned as despicable and reprehensible. “
