Fraud Alert: Portharcourt residents lament over monetary exploitation by NIMC officials

Since the Federal government of Nigeria ordered telecom companies to disconnect individuals whose mobile numbers are not connected to National Identity Number (NIN), some officials of National Identity Card Commission (NIMC) have fraudulently seen it as an avenue for personal enrichment.

Though, this ugly trend is seemingly becoming a norm across the federation with little or no decisive action on the part of Buhari’s administration to arrest the corrupt habit.

Some Port-Harcourt residents who spoke with ElombahNews but doesn’t want their names on print have recounted their ordeals in the hands of NIMC officials.

Philip (Not his original name) said, “When I got to the registration centre, I was told by NIMC officials to pay the sum 2000 naira before my data could be captured. It was surprising to me because FG never mandated NIMC to charge any fee before registration could be completed.

“I stood for an hour, thinking what to do next. I even got confused when I saw other Nigerians paying the money. At that time, I gave up. I discovered there was nothing I could do about the situation.

Another resident said, “When I got to my registration centre, Some families and other well to do individuals were ready to pay the bundle and get captured as soon as possible. The entire exercise became a case of “whom do you know and how much do you have?” So, many of us stood by the side and watch because there was no such money to part over a corrupt act.

ElombahNews had earlier reported another case of monetary exploitation by NIMC officials at Saint Paul’s Catholic church, Oyigbo. Some residents of the city lamented how they were compelled to buy a form for a fee of 100 to 200 naira depending on the person’s bargaining power before their data could be captured on the system.

However, this corrupt act has continued unabated without the government taking drastic measures to arrest the unfortunate situation.

The administration of president Buhari must peep into the activities of NIMC and halt them from compounding the woes of Nigerians.
