Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has directed the state Legal team to take up the case of a gruesome murder of an indigene of the state, Late Mrs Idongesit Udoh by a trigger happy Police Officer, Mr Musiliu Aremu, in Lagos State.
The Governor who was represented by the Special Assistant on Legal Services, Barrister Andem Andem, said that the life of every Akwa Ibom person wherever they may reside means more to his administration and that he would stop at nothing to guarantee their safety and well-being.
He condemned the murder of Late Idongesit, a mother of four who met her untimely death through a Police bullet and urged the Legal department to ensure that justice is done and the culprit brought to book. This, he said would serve as a deterrent to other careless cops.
Recounting the ordeal, husband of the deceased, Mr Sunday Udoh, a Printer, who hails from Ndot in Orok Anam Local Government Area, said that Mr Musiliu Aremu and four other of his colleagues on Wednesday 16th September, 20015, flagged down his tricycle at Ijegun Bus stop in a check point at about 9.45pm while returning from a Church Programme and demanded for two thousand naira which he never had to offer.
He said Mr Aremu asked him to come down, cocked his riffle and insisted that he should give the money. At that point his wife alighted from the tricycle with their one year old baby and pleaded that the Police should allow them to go when suddenly Mr Aremu shot her in the head and she fell down and bled profusely. He said the bullet also caught him on his lower jaw.
On seeing the wife’s corpse on the ground, Mr Aremu and his team fled the scene before sympathisers took them to Igandu General Hospital where his wife was certified dead. He was referred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Mr Udoh who was full of thanks to the Human Right Activist, Dr Jo Odumakin, said the Activist has solicited for him by making presentations to the Lagos State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives, demanding justice on the incidence.
The corpse has been deposited in the Mainland Hospital Mortuary, Yaba and the Lagos State Police Commissioner Mr Ajini Owoseni has visited the family to express sympathy on the dead assuring that the Police would take over the burial expenses of the deceased and support in the upkeep of the family.
Mr Sunday Udoh, who received a package from the state government through Barrister Andem, expressed appreciation to the Governor for the gesture and prayed God to bless him and sustain his tenure.
In a related development, a Construction Firm, NigerPet Structures has, as part of it corporate social responsibility, donated two million naira to the bereaved family. The Managing Director of the Company, Engr. Terry Follet, made the presentation at the corporate headquarters of the company.
