Rattled by the likely mass defection of Akwa Ibom State PDP members to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has been accused of a conspiracy to assassinate PDP members perceived as likely to dump the PDP to the APC and frame the APC Governorship candidate, Mr. Umana Umana and the APC for the murder, the Akwa Ibom Redeemers have alleged.
In a statement issued in Uyo on Sunday by its National President, Dr. Friday Umoren , the group alleged that the Governor, who was visibly shaken and worried at the grand reception accorded the APC governorship candidate on Saturday in Uyo, held a secret emergency meeting of his kitchen cabinet late into night where he complained bitterly about the invasion of the Akwa Ibom International Airport and Uyo metropolis by thousands of APC supporters, who trooped out to welcome Mr. Umana after the tribunal judgement.
“The governor also allegedly pointed out the presence of two former Local Government chairmen of PDP namely Hon. Ekerete Ekpeyong, Uyo and Hon. Michael Etim ‘Mac Joe’, Itu at the APC rally, saying they pose serious threat to him and the party as such must be “contained”.
Furthermore, the group alleged that at the Saturday night meeting, which lasted till the early hours of Sunday, resolution was taken to eliminate PDP members seen as likely to betray the party by decamping to the APC.
The Governor who was jittery at the presence of two former Council chairmen at Umana’s reception rally is alleged to have mandated that any “rebel” within the PDP should be stopped from decamping so as to stop the tide of mass defection that has hit the PDP in recent times.
Akwa Ibom Redeemers therefore called on the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and relevant security agencies to probe the conspiracy, warning that any attempt to kill, kidnap or frame up any APC member or members will be resisted.
“We call on the NSA and the IG to investigate this deadly and wicked conspiracy of the Udom regime targeted at innocent Akwa Ibom sons and daughters whose only crime is to follow their conscience and decide to join the change train. We condemn in the strongest possible terms any conspiracy to frame up Mr. Umana for any assassination planned, plotted and executed by desperate elements of the Udom regime on behalf of the Governor “, the release said.
The group said it would be fatal to disregard such Intel, considering the antecedence of the PDP regime in the state and called on Udom Emmanuel to exercise caution and restraint in spite of the anxiety and apprehension that may engulf him over the tribunals’ nullification of the election in 18 LGA’s and the unprecedented crowd that trooped out en masse to welcome and receive the APC candidate and his entourage.
Continuing the statement read, ” While some may dismiss this alarm with a wave of the hand, it is pertinent we remember that the PDP in Akwa Ibom is a government and a party that has the penchant for the systematic elimination of political opponents and frame up the same opponents who are victims of the state sponsored terrorism as the perpetrators.
A case in point which is still fresh in memory was the recent assassination of Albert Ukpanah by agents of the state government only for the son to be framed up for his father’s murder and detained as well as the gruesome murder of former deputy speaker and APC House of Assembly candidate for Ukanafun, Obong Okon Uwah, who was killed by thugs loyal to the PDP and led by the former vice chairman of Ukanafun only for the State Commissioner for Information , Mr. Aniekan Umanah, to issue a statement on behalf of Akpabio that the murdered APC chieftain died while on a campaign consultation to his constituents”.
“Lest we forget that this same party orchestrated the killing, maiming and burning of cars at the state Secretariat as well as the burning down of the Goodluck Jonathan campaign office in Uyo only to turn round to frame up the then ACN Governorship candidate, Senator John James Udoedeghe, who was arrested, detained, tried and acquitted.
But, let us state categorically that any state sponsored crime against Akwa Ibom people by Udom and his gang will not go unpunished as the era of executive lawlessness and impunity is over”, the group stated.
Dr Umoren called on the NSA to investigate the role of Mr. Enobong Uwah, Prince Ukpong Akpabio, Capt Iniobong Ekong (Rtd), Obong Paul Ekpo, Sir Emem Akpabio, Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem, Barr Uwemedimo Nwoko in the conspiracy as well as known PDP hitmen, who do the dirty jobs of eliminating political opponents for their paymasters.
The release warned Governor Emmanuel to be mindful of the fact that he will soon be made to account for all his actions in office as no crime committed in his name will go unpunished.
“We find it ridiculous that a Governor, who boasted that even if election is to be conducted ten times, the PDP will continue to win, will be so restless for just a reception held by Akwa Ibom people to receive and honour Umana Okon Umana.
The presence of two former Council chairmen of PDP extraction, who were on hand to receive the APC candidate should not surprise the PDP as more prominent members of the decaying PDP are on their way out. But, rather than panic, Udom should see the forthcoming rerun as an avenue to test his popularity in a free and fair election devoid of manipulation of the process with the connivance of a corrupt INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner and staff, hijacking of election materials and killing of voters which were the hallmark of the April 11 election”.
The group warned that any attempt to assassinate or kidnap any APC member, or family members by agents of the PDP government in the state will be viewed as a declaration of war which will spell doom for the Governor and his party and called on security agencies to be on the red alert and bring to book all those implicated in the conspiracy.
